Retriever Volleyball Sweeps Howard, 3-0

    Junior Ashley Oscars had a game-high 11 kills against Howard on Tuesday night.

    WASHINGTON—The UMBC volleyball team hit 33 kills against only eight errors on the way to defeating Howard in straight sets, 25-14, 25-20 and 25-14, Tuesday night in Washington, D.C.

     

    The Retrievers hit .368 for the match, while holding the Bison to just a .105 hitting percentage. Junior Ashley Oscars (Bakersfield, Calif./Liberty) led UMBC with a game-high 11 kills, while reigning America East Rookie of the Week Alyssa Lang (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) added nine kills along with a team-high eight digs.

     

    The only close set was the second when the Bison led 19-16. After UMBC head coach Ian Blanchard called a timeout, the Retrievers closed the game on a 9-1 run including two service aces by junior Pam Jarrett (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Pius X), who finished the match with a game-high four aces.

     

    Every Retriever saw action in the match including freshman Iman Kennedy (Charlotte, N.C./Independence), who added two total blocks and a thunderous kill on her first collegiate touch.

     

    The Retrievers return to action Friday as they host the UMBC tournament against UMES and Niagara Friday at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., and Duquesne Saturday at 5 p.m.
