UMBC VOLLEYBALL WINS LA SALLE INVITATIONAL; COOKSON NAMED TOURNAMENT MVP

The Retriever volleyball team bested Drexel, 3-0, and host LaSalle, 3-1, to capture the LaSalle Invitational in Philadelphia, PA. UMBC (4-0) had won Friday matches vs. Morgan State (3-1) and Lafayette (3-0). In today's action, UMBC bested Drexel, 30-28, 30-25, 30-24. Junior setter Heather Kerley recorded 24 assists and led the Retrievers with 11 kills. Julia Waclawiak added 10 kills and Tauna Woolery led the defensive effort with 12 digs. Against the Explorers, UMBC lost game #1, 32-30, despite hitting .436. But the Retrievers won the next three games, 30-28, 31-29, 30-21. Dana Cookson had a big match, with 23 kills and Jennifer Davis added 14. Kerley contributed 46 assists.UMBC's Dana Cookson earned Most Valuable Player honors for the tournament, while Heather Kerley was also named to the All Tournament Team. UMBC opens the home season vs. Navy on Wednesday night.
