Freshman Sabrina Hoeks tallied a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs in the Retrievers' 3-0 win over Hartford.

BALTIMORE, Md.—The UMBC volleyball team recorded their 20th win in a season for the first time since 1998, when they finished with a 22-7 record, after blanking Hartford, 3-0 (30-22, 30-17, 30-25), on Friday night at the RAC Arena.

The Retrievers (20-11, 5-6 America East) currently stand at 10-2 at the RAC Arena this season, with their only losses coming to George Washington in their home-opener on Sept. 4, and a 3-0 setback against Binghamton on Oct. 21.  The Hawks fall to 8-22 and 1-10 in the America East.

Freshman Bridget Scheetz (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline Academy) led the Retrievers, adding eight assisted blocks to bring her single-season assisted blocks record up to 112, just two shy of breaking into the all-time career assisted blocks list.  Scheetz also tallied 12 kills on 18 attacks, with just three errors for a .500 hitting percentage.

Freshman Sabrina Hoeks (Olympia, Wash./AG West Black Hills) hit .300 for the match, while tallying a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs.

Jennifer Monroy led the Hawks with 10 kills, while also adding eight digs.

The Hawks opened a 5-0 lead over the Retrievers in game one, but a Hoeks kill sparked a five-point serving run behind senior Stacey Carroll (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) that gave the Retrievers a 14-10 lead.

A kill by Carroll then sparked a run behind senior Marisa Gross’ (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) serve to take a 28-20 lead on the way to the 30-22 victory.

The Hawks struck first in game two as well, but a Retriever kill followed by a Hawk error gave the Retrievers the 2-1 lead, which they wouldn’t relinquish as they rolled over Hartford, 30-16.  The set also saw a four-point serving run behind Hoeks, which started with three consecutive service aces.

The Retrievers saw a 13-9 lead turn into a 15-13 deficit after a 6-0 run by the Hawks in game three.  Another four-point run behind Hoeks, however, gave the Retrievers the 18-15 lead and a run behind Gross’ serve put the Retrievers up 23-18 en route to the eventual 30-25 set and match point.

The Retrievers will conclude the 2007 season on Sunday, when they take on Stony Brook at 5:00 p.m. on Senior Day, where they will honor their five graduating players.
