Freshman Sabrina Hoeks came just one service ace away from a triple-double on Wednesday night.

BALTIMORE—The UMBC volleyball team notched their ninth straight win at the RAC Arena as they defeated NJIT, 3-1 (30-22, 25-30, 33-31, 30-15), on Wednesday night.

The Retrievers (18-5) have won their last two straight, while the Highlanders (7-17) have dropped their last two.

Freshman Sabrina Hoeks (Olympia, Wash./AG West Black Hills) led the Retrievers in almost every category for the match and came just one service ace away from a triple-double.  The rookie posted a season-high of 20 kills and tied her season-high of 16 digs while also adding nine service aces and two assisted blocks.

Sophomore Kira Giles (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada/Glenlawn) also tallied a double-double with 45 assists and 16 digs while adding three block assists and sophomore Tiffany Johnson (Abingdon, Md./Arundel/Kansas State) was just two blocks away from a double-double as she totaled 11 kills and eight assisted blocks.

The Highlanders had two players with double-doubles as Katrina Hornstein totaled 12 kills and 15 digs and Erica Schultz added 15 assists and 18 digs.

The Retrievers never led in game one thanks to an 11-point run sparked by a Hoeks kill.  Hoeks then proceeded to serve for 10 consecutive points, which included four of her nine service aces to propel the Retrievers to the 30-22 victory.

The Highlanders opened up a 3-0 advantage on the Retrievers in game two and never let the Retrievers closer than three points after they took a 6-3 lead en route to the 30-25 decision.

The third set was much more of a see-saw affair that saw 16 total ties and six lead changes, but the Retrievers gained the 33-31 win thanks to two consecutive errors by NJIT to take a 2-1 advantage over the Highlanders in the match.

The Retrievers cemented the match win in the fourth game behind a seven-point serving run by Giles and then finished off the Highlanders as sophomore Ashley Oscars (Bakersfield, Calif./Liberty) served out the final nine points for the 30-15 win.

The Retrievers host conference-foe Albany on Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. in the RAC Arena.
