Retrievers Earn Fourth Weekly Award; Hoeks Named Rookie of the Week
Freshman Sabrina Hoeks became the fourth Retriever to earn a weekly conference award, as she was named the America East Rookie of the Week for the week ending Sept. 30, the conference announced Monday.
Hoeks recorded her first double-double of her collegiate career in the Retrievers’ 3-1 win over
Hoeks finished the week second in the conference in service aces with eight in 11 games. Over the weekend, she averaged 4.00 kills per game, 1.00 aces per game, 3.20 digs per game, and 5.50 points per game while hitting at .327 in both conference matches.
Freshman Bridget Scheetz Breaks Into Single-Season Assisted Blocks Chart
Freshman Bridget Scheetz broke into the UMBC all-time top ten for assisted blocks in a single-season as she added five assisted block against
Scheetz currently ranks ninth on the top ten list and needs just two assisted blocks to claim the eighth spot. She also has five solo blocks this season for a grand total of 72 blocks and needs 18 more total blocks to break into the single-season chart for total blocks.
Former Retriever Kara Welniak set the record for most assisted blocks in a single-season, when she tallied 93 during the 1999 season. Rehena Rentuma holds the total blocks record for a single-season with 135 in 1991.

Three Retrievers ranked in the top 75 of the country through games 09/09/07, the NCAA reported last week.
Freshman Bridget Scheetz achieved the highest ranking for the Retrievers as she averaged a .392 hitting percentage during the reporting period, which ranks 49th in the country.
Sophomore Pam Jarrett also cracked into the rankings, averaging 5.08 digs per game, which ties for 66th in the NCAA and sophomore Kira Giles averaged 11.76 assists per game, good for 74th in the rankings.
As a team, the Retrievers also came in on the top 75 list, ranking 53rd in service aces per game (2.12), 25th in win-loss percentage (.875), and 19th in digs per game (18.81).
Retrievers Earn First Home Victory of the Season over Howard
After falling, 3-1, to George Washington in their home-opener, the Retrievers blanked Howard, 3-0, on Tuesday to win their first home match of 2007 and their fourth straight. The Retrievers achieved a complete 180-degree turn from the loss to GW, as they steadily increased their hitting percentage during the match against Howard. In a match that saw only nine errors from the Retriever side of the court, UMBC posted a hitting percentages of .297, .429, and .435 with just one error in the third set, and recorded a .379 for the match. Freshman Sabrina Hoeks was the only player to see action in all three sets as she led the Retrievers with nine kills, nine digs, and a .348 hitting percentage.
UMBC Gets Back on Winning Track, Claims Bobcat Invitational Title
After a home-opening loss on Tuesday, the Retrievers bounced back during the weekend tournament to defeat
Sophomore Kira Giles tallied 158 assists during the tournament, to bring her career total up to 1,163 assists and claim the seventh spot on the Retrievers’ all-time list.
Retrievers Drop Home-Opener, 3-1, to George Washington
UMBC fell, 3-1, to George Washington in the first home match of the 2007 season and snapped a four-game winning streak to fall to 4-1. The Retrievers mistakes and ineffectiveness proved to be their bane in the match as each set saw their hitting percentage steadily decline. They started out hitting .257 as a team in Game 1, in which they defeated the Colonials 30-24, but fell to .182 in Game 2, .119 in Game 3, and .022 in Game 4, totaling 11 attack errors in Game 4 and 31 for the match.
Giles Becomes Ninth Retriever with 1,000 Assists
Sophomore Kira Giles become the ninth Retriever in school history to record over 1,000 assists in a career after UMBC’s opening weekend. Giles recorded a total of 136 assists in four matches at the La Salle Tournament to bring her career total up to 1,005 assists. The setter averaged 11.33 assists per game in the tournament, which ranked second in the America East Conference charts at the time. Giles, who is currently ninth on the Retrievers top 10 all-time career assists chart, needs just 37 assists to move into eighth all-time. Her teammate, senior Stacey Carroll is currently eighth all-time with 1,041 assists.

Freshman Bridget Scheetz was named the America East Conference Rookie of the Week for the week ending Sept. 3. After the first week of play Scheetz was the conference-leader with 1.67 blocks per game and also ranked in the top 10 for hitting percentage, kills, and points per game. The
