Sophomore Kira Giles tallied 32 assists, four kills, two digs, and one assisted block in the win over Coppin State.

BALTIMORE—The UMBC volleyball team notched their 10th consecutive win against Coppin State, as the Retrievers (10-3) downed the Eagles (1-8), 3-0, on Tuesday night at the RAC Arena.

The Retrievers snap a two-game losing streak from last weekend’s Towson Tournament, while the Eagles follow their first win from last weekend with a loss.

Sophomore Kira Giles (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada/Glenlawn) was the only Retriever to play all three sets and posted a total of 32 assists, while contributing four kills on each of her four attacks, as well as two digs and one assisted block.

Indira Laurencin led the Eagles in the loss, recording eight kills and nine digs.

The Retrievers got off to a slow start in game one, but took a 4-3 lead and never relinquished that lead as they handed the Eagles a 30-16 decision.

Game two saw two huge scoring runs for the Retrievers with the first started off a kill by sophomore Sarah Fillmore (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) and then five straight points behind sophomore Tiffany Johnson’s (Abingdon, Md./Kansas State/Arundel) serve to put the Retrievers up, 16-6.

A service error by the Eagles turned the serve over to senior Britney Hodson (South Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury), who proceeded to serve out the game with another five-point run and give the Retrievers the 30-13 win.

The Eagles came out with a renewed sense of play for the third and final set, tying the Retrievers on four different occasions and the Retrievers adding three more ties themselves.  The turning point came after the Retrievers knotted the score at 11 points each on freshman Bianca Sande’s (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines) kill that set up freshman redshirt Helen Smith (Gaithersburg, Md./Watkins Mill) to serve for two points and give the Retrievers a 14-11 lead.

Freshman Sabrina Hoeks (Olympia, Wash./AG West Black Hills) cemented the win for the Retrievers as she served for four consecutive points for a 29-17 lead.  A kill by senior Katrina Carrick (San Diego, Calif./Morse) gave the Retrievers the 30-19 match point as they downed the Eagles, 3-0.

The Retrievers continue their homestand this weekend as they host Fairleigh Dickinson and Morgan State in a tri-match on Saturday, with the Retrievers slated to play the Knights at 10:00 a.m. and the Bears at 5:30 p.m.
