UMBC Volleyball Snaps Five-Match Winning Streak; Johnson Named to All-Tournament Team

    Sophomore Tiffany Johnson averaged 1.30 blocks per game over the weekend and was named to the All-Tournament team.

    TOWSON, Md.—The UMBC volleyball team snapped a five-match winning streak, as it fell to No. 21 Dayton, 3-0, and Western Kentucky, 3-1, on Saturday at the final day of the Towson Tournament at the Towson Center.

     

    The Retrievers (9-3) were plagued by errors versus the Flyers (13-0), recording a total of 26 attack errors to Dayton’s 14 and posting a team hitting percentage of .009 for the match.

     

    Freshman Bianca Sande (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines) led the Retrievers in the loss, tallying seven kills and 11 digs, while Jamie-Lee Richards led the Flyers with 14 kills on 25 attacks with just one error for a .520 hitting percentage.  Richards also added four digs and two assisted blocks as the Flyers posted game victories of 30-23, 30-13, and 30-18)

     

    The Retrievers improved vastly in their second match against the Lady Toppers (10-3) as they recorded a hitting percentage of .150 for the match and had just one game with a hitting percentage under .100.

     

    Sophomore Tiffany Johnson (Abingdon, Md./Kansas State/Arundel) had her best outing of the season thus far, tallying eight assisted blocks while also adding four digs and six kills.  Johnson was named to the All-Tournament team after averaging 1.30 blocks per game during the duration of the tournament.

     

    Johnson was very instrumental in the Retrievers 30-23 win in game two as she tallied four of her eight assisted blocks in the set.  Sophomore Ashley Oscars (Bakersfield, Calif./Liberty) helped on the offensive side, recording four of her eight total match kills in the Retrievers second-set win.

     

    The Lady Toppers maintained the upper hand, however, after an opening-match set win of 30-24 and defeated the Retrievers with game three and game four scores of 30-28 and 30-18.

     

    The Retrievers return home of Tuesday, Sept. 18 as they face Coppin State at 7:00 p.m. and then host Fairleigh Dickinson and Morgan State in a tri-match on Saturday, Sept. 22.
