Freshman Sabrina Hoeks played all three sets for the Retrievers and recorded nine kills, nine digs, and a .348 hitting percentage in the win over Howard.

BALTIMORE—The UMBC volleyball team defeated Howard, 3-0, in straight sets on Tuesday night at the RAC Arena.

The Retrievers (8-1) have won their last four straight matches, while the Bison (0-8) remain winless for the season and have lost the last eight straight.

The Retrievers posted a hitting percentage of .379 for the match and committed just nine attack errors, while the Bison hit a dismal .018 for the match with 26 attack errors.

Freshman Sabrina Hoeks (Olympia, Wash./AG West Black Hills) was the only player to see action in all three sets and led the Retrievers with nine kills, nine digs, one assisted block, and a .348 hitting percentage.

Morgan Maxwell was tops for the Bison with eight kills, eight digs, and one solo block.

The Bison jumped onto the board first, holding a 2-0 advantage on the Retrievers, but UMBC soon went on a 5-0 run to take the 6-3 lead.

The Bison threatened with ties at 12 and 13 points apiece, but after a kill by senior Britney Hodson (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) made it 23-16, the Retrievers picked up five consecutive points behind sophomore Kira Giles’ (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada/Glenlawn) serve for a 28-16 advantage and the eventual 30-17 set point.

Game 2 saw the Retrievers attack first, but the Bison took an early 2-1 lead before junior Angela Anderson (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) evened the score at two and then served for the Bridget Scheetz (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline Academy) kill that gave the Retrievers a 3-2 lead they would not relinquish.

The Retrievers once again went on a scoring run behind Giles’ serve as a Hoeks kill started a seven point rally for the Retrievers to give them a 13-5 advantage.

Scheetz added her own four-point serving run in addition to hitting .667 in the set with four kills and a service ace, while Giles tallied two aces of her own in the game.

Sophomore Pam Jarrett (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Pius X) served out the final three points after a Bianca Sande (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines) kill for the 30-13 win.

The Retrievers dominated the third and final game, hitting an incredible .435 and committing just one attack error, while the Bison held a hitting percentage of -.069 with 11 errors.

The Retrievers led by as many as 18 points, with the score 26-8 and picked up the 30-11 match point on a Sande service ace.

Sande tallied four kills, two digs, and one block assist in the final set.

The Retrievers will take to the road this weekend for their final regular season tournament as they take on No. 21 Dayton, Western Kentucky, and host Towson at the Towson Tournament from Sept. 14-15.
