Scheetz Named America East Volleyball Rookie of the Week

9/5/2007

  • America East Release

Bridget Scheetz is the third Retriever in three years to earn the conference's first weekly rookie award.

BOSTON—UMBC volleyball freshman Bridget Scheetz (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline Academy) earned the America East Conference Rookie of the Week award for the week ending Sept. 3, the conference announced on Tuesday.

Scheetz is the first recipient of the Rookie of the Week award for the 2007 season, and the third Retriever in a row to win the first conference weekly award.  Sophomore Kira Giles (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada/Glenlawn) took the first rookie award in 2006, while junior Sarah Ball (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada/Sisler) earned the award in 2005.

The Retriever rookies have had much success in the America East, with UMBC players claiming the past two Rookie of the Year accolades (Ashley Oscars in 2006, Sarah Ball in 2005).

Scheetz is well on her way at making a place in the America East, as she currently leads the conference with 1.67 blocks per game after totaling 20 total blocks (19 assisted) in UMBC’s four-game tournament at La Salle last weekend.

Scheetz also recorded a .382 hitting percentage and averaged 4.04 points per game and 2.92 kills during the Retrievers’ opening weekend at the La Salle Tournament.
