UMBC Incoming Volleyball Freshman Madison Bingaman Tragically Killed in Automobile Accident

UMBC incoming women’s volleyball freshman Madison Bingaman passed away Wednesday night after sustaining fatal injuries in an automobile crash in Tennessee.

Bingaman, 18, was traveling from her hometown of Austin, Texas to Baltimore, Maryland with her mother, Peggy Bingaman, when their car was involved in an automobile accident.  Peggy died on Friday evening from injuries suffered in the accident at the Regional Medical Center at Memphis.

Bingaman was to join the rest of her teammates for preseason training at UMBC on Thursday after graduating from Stony Point High School earlier this year.

“We’re all shocked and saddened by this tragic news,” said head coach Ian Blanchard.  “Maddie was a vibrant, very bright, wonderful young woman who had a wonderful future in front of her on so many different levels.  Words can’t describe how devastated the entire UMBC Athletics community, in particular our volleyball family, is at this time.  Our hearts and prayers go out to the entire Bingaman family.”

Earlier this year Bingaman was a part of the third-place Austin Junior Volleyball Club at the USA Junior Olympic Championships and earned numerous accolades with her high school team. 

In 2004 she was named All-Texas Honorable Mention, Second Team All-District, and Second Team All-Williamson County.  She was named Second Team All-Central Texas, All-Texas Special Recognition, Stony Point High School MVP, First Team All-Williamson County, and First Team All-District in 2005, and Second Team All-District in 2006.
