VOLLEYBALL TEAM TAKES FIRST TWO AT LASALLE TOURNAMENT

UMBC opened its volleyball season with a pair of victories in the LaSalle Tournament. The Retrievers opened with a 3-1 win over Morgan State,triumphing, 30-22, 30-21, 25-30, 31-29. UMBC recorded 57 digs to Morgan's 40, inlcluding a team-high 12 by freshman Jackie Carbo. Dana Cookson led UMBC with 12 kills, and Jill Engel added 8. UMBC cruised past Lafayette, 3-0, by scores of 30-23, 30-17, 30-15. In this game, UMBC hit a brilliant .379. Jennifer Davis led the way with 13 kills (hitting .571), and Cookson added 10. Junior setter Heather Kerley contributed 24 assists. The Retrievers complete play tomorrow with matches vs. Drexel and the host Explorers.
