Volleyball Team Falls in Five Games in America East Title Match to Host Albany

11/19/2006

Albany, N.Y.--The upstart UMBC volleyball team was within eight points of an America East title and a bid to the NCAA Tournament. They had won the first two games against heavily-favored and host Albany and led, 22-16 in game three. But the Great Danes came from behind the win game three and took the match in five games to claim their second title in three years.

The loss snapped UMBC's winning streak at four games and ended their season with a mark of 16-15.  Sophomore Sarah Ball and freshman Kira Giles were named to the All Tournament Team.

UMBC won games one and two by scores of 30-27 and 30-22. Albany came back to take game three, 30-26 and rolled in game four, 30-18. The Retrievers held a slim 5-4 lead in the deciding game when Albany went on a 5-0 run to forge ahead, 9-5. They did not allow UMBC to put together a streak of their own and took game five, 15-12.

After 22 kills and just three errors in a dominating game two, UMBC hit only .119, .038 and .174 in the final three games. The Retrievers hit .158 for the match, while the Great Danes countered at .234.

Ball had 14 kills,  hit .244 and posted a team-high 23 digs.  Freshman Ashley Oscars led UMBC in kills with 18, while senior Jessie Folk and sophomore Angela Anderson tallied 12 each. Giles posted 54 assists, giving her 114 for the tournament.
