UMBC Volleyball News and Notes

UMBC Volleyball News and Notes: 

 

The UMBC women’s volleyball team will compete against Binghamton in its first appearance in the America East Conference Tournament in a semifinal match-up on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.  The tournament is being held at the University of Albany in Albany, N.Y.  UMBC finished the regular season with a 15-14 record and a 7-5 record in the conference, which gained them the #3 seed in the tournament.  Live scoreboards or statistics for all rounds of the 2006 America East Volleyball Championship will be made available online at www.AmericaEast.com.

UMBC Takes on Binghamton in Conference Semifinal

UMBC travels to the University of Albany on Saturday to take on Binghamton in their first America East Conference Tournament.  The semifinal match-up between the Retrievers and the defending America East Conference champion Bearcats will be the third meeting this year, with Binghamton leading with two wins.  In the all-time history between the schools, Binghamton holds a 7-1 advantage over the Retrievers.

 

America East Conference Champions to be Crowned

The America East Conference regular season wrapped up last week with Albany taking the regular season title with a 10-2 record in conference play.  Binghamton finished with a 9-3 record while UMBC finished third with a 7-5 record.  Stony Brook and New Hampshire tied for fourth with a 6-6 record and Maine and Hartford round out the conference standings with 4-8 and 0-12 records, respectively.  The America East Conference announced the four finalists for the 2006 America East Conference Women’s Volleyball Tournament last week.  No. 3 UMBC will compete against No. 2 Binghamton in a semifinal match-up on Saturday, November 18 at 5:30 p.m., while No. 1 Albany will host the tournament and compete against No. 4 Stony Brook in the first semifinal match on Saturday at 3 p.m.  The winners of the semifinal rounds will compete for the championship title on Sunday, November 19 at 2 p.m.

 

Wylie Three Shy of Single-Season Digs Record, Ball Records 14th and 15th Double-Double, Fillmore Third Retriever to be Named Rookie of the Week

UMBC senior libero Jennifer Wylie added a total of 39 digs last week to bring her season total up to 534, just three digs shy of the UMBC All-Time Single-Season Record of 537, set by Tracey Cullins in 1990.  Wylie recorded 14 digs against Maine and then added 25 in the match against New Hampshire—the fourteenth time this season she has been over 20 digs in a match.

 

Sophomore outside hitter Sarah Ball recorded her 14th and 15th double-doubles of the season, tallying 10 kills and 12 digs against Maine and 11 kills and 11 digs against New Hampshire. 

Freshman outside hitter Sarah Fillmore became the third Retriever to be named Rookie of the Week after her 17-kill performance against Maine.  In the match, Fillmore dislocated a finger in the third set, yet continued to play in the fourth set, helping the Retrievers to a 3-1 win.

 

Seniors Play on Senior Day, Retrievers Continue to Make Their Mark

UMBC seniors Julia Hood and Andrea Clarke saw playing time in their second and third matches of the season against Binghamton and Navy last week.  The match against Binghamton on Senior Day, marked the second time the two have played all season, with Hood recording one kill.  Clarke managed one dig in her third match of the season against Navy, while Hood tallied one kill and one block assist. 

 

The Retrievers continue to make their mark on the All-Time and Single-Season charts, as senior Jennifer Wylie moved up into third place on the Single-Season Digs Chart, adding 22 last week for a total of 495.  Junior Amanda Willey moved into a four-way tie for ninth place on the Single-Season Assisted Blocks Chart, with a total of 63, while senior Jessie Folk moved into fourth on the Career Total Blocks Chart with 259 and is three matches away from entering a three-way tie for ninth place on the Career Matches Played Chart.

 

Oscars Ties Ball’s Rookie of the Week Record, Giles Earns Third Award

UMBC freshman Ashley Oscars was named the America East Conference Rookie of the Week for the seventh time this season, for the week ending on Oct. 29.  The award ties sophomore Sarah Ball’s record of seven Rookie of the Week awards, set last year.  Freshman Kira Giles also earned her third award of the season, after being named the America East Conference Setter of the Week last week. 

 

Oscars extended her streak to 19 consecutive games with double-figure kills after posting 3.50 kills per game, 4.44 points per game and 1.38 digs per game last week. Giles recorded her eighth double-double of the season against Stony Brook, tallying 54 assists and 14 digs.  She finished with 94 assists last week and 11.75 assists per game. 

 

Senior Jennifer Wylie continues to move up the Single-Season Dig chart, as she added 35 digs last week, with a 20-dig performance against Stony Brook, to give her a season total of 473 and move her into fourth on the list.  Senior Jessie Folk also moved up the charts, as she added five assisted blocks last week to put her into second on the All-Time Career Assisted Blocks chart with 232.

 

Oscars Garners Sixth Rookie of the Week, Retrievers Moving Up the Charts

UMBC freshman Ashley Oscars was named the America East Conference Rookie of the Week for the sixth time this season, for the week ending on Oct. 22.  Oscars extended her streak to 17 consecutive games with double-figure kills after posting 4.17 kills per game, 4.50 points per game and 1.17 digs per game last week.  Oscars posted 25 kills last week and is one weekly award away from tying teammate Sarah Ball’s record of seven Rookie of the Week awards set last year.

 

The Retrievers continue to move up the All-Time and Single-Season charts, with senior Jennifer Wylie becoming the 12th member of the 400-Dig Club last week and jumping to seventh in the standings with 438 total digs.  Freshman Kira Giles returned to play last week, her last match dating back to almost a month ago on Sept. 23 at Morgan State.  Giles broke into the All-Time Top 10 for Assists, with 525 this season. 

 

Wylie Joins 400-Dig Club, Carroll Moves Past 1000 Career Assists

UMBC senior Jennifer Wylie became the 12th member of the 400-Dig Club with 408, after recording 33 digs in last week’s matches.  Wylie leads the America East Conference averaging 5.30 digs per game, while UMBC as a team ranks 28th in the nation, averaging 18.42 dpg.  UMBC junior Stacey Carroll broke the 1000-assist mark after recording 100 assists last week, bringing her career total to 1011.  Carroll averaged 12.50 assists last week while adding five kills and 22 digs, for 2.75 dpg.  Carroll, who had four 50-plus assist matches last season, has been used sparingly this season but has recorded 40-plus assists in her past six matches, dating back to Oct. 1.

 

Wylie Controlling Back Line as UMBC Ranks 24th in Nation in Digs

UMBC senior Jennifer Wylie has been a force on the Retriever back line this year, taking over the duties of libero and taunting opponent hitters with a 5.43 digs per game, tops in the America East Conference.   After being ranked in the top-30 in the nation the previous three weeks, Wylie dropped out two weeks ago.  As of games through Oct. 8, her mark of 5.43 digs per game ranks just behind 30th place held by Western Illinois’ Jennifer Alexander with 5.45 digs per game.  UMBC as a team is recording 18.43 digs per game, ranking 24th in the nation.  Wylie as the team libero has been the biggest force but has received a lot of help from Sarah Ball at 3.52 dpg, Kira Giles at 2.93 dpg, Mallorie Clary at 2.33 dpg and Pam Jarrett at 1.46 dpg.  

 

Oscars Makes It Five in a Row

UMBC freshman Ashley Oscars earned her fifth consecutive America East Conference Rookie of the Week award for the week ending October 8, 2006.  Oscars led UMBC to two victories last week recording a team best 4.25 kills per game and 5.00 points per game as the Retrievers defeated St. Francis (Pa.) and Maine.

 

Oscars, who has double figures in kills in 12 consecutive matches, tallied 18 kills, a service ace and two assisted blocks against St. Francis (Pa.) for 20 points in the match. She went on hit .406 with 16 kills and three errors on 32 swings against Maine to lead the Retrievers to victory in their only conference match of the week. Oscars tallied eight assisted blocks for 20.0 points in the match. Oscars on the season is averaging 4.26 kpg and 4.73 ppg while in league play she is averaging 4.92 kpg and 5.38 ppg.

 

With her fifth consecutive Rookie of the Week award, Oscars is two weekly awards away from tying teammate Sarah Ball’s record of seven Rookie of the Week awards set last year.  UMBC this season has earned all of the first year player awards with setter Kira Giles being tabbed Rookie of the Week the first week of the season.  

 

Amanda Willey Stifles Maine with 14 Blocks

UMBC junior Amanda Willey recorded a career-high 14 blocks, the most blocks in a single game by a UMBC player since at least 1998.  Willey’s 14 blocks were all assisted blocks in the match as UMBC had 20.5 team blocks.  Willey has 56 assisted blocks on the season, placing her eight blocks outside the top-10 for a single season.  With 106 career assisted blocks in two seasons, she ranks 10th on UMBC’s all-time assisted blocks chart. 

 

Stacey Carroll Takes Full Advantage of First Start

UMBC junior Stacey Carroll took full advantage of her first state at setter on the season, recording a career-high 62 assists against Morgan State.  Carroll averaged 12.40 assists per game in the five-set match while adding one kill and seven digs.  Carroll, who had four 50-plus assist matches last season, has been used sparingly this season but flourished in her first opportunity as her 62 digs is the most by a UMBC setter since former Retriever Megan Gross tallied 63 assists in a four-set match on Aug. 30, 2003.

 

Retrievers Take Second in Villanova Classic

With a 2-1 record in the Villanova Classic, UMBC took second place overall and placed two members on the All-Tournament team, as freshman Ashley Oscars and sophomore Ashley Hargrove earned the honors.  Oscars averaged 4.00 kills per game and hit .223 for the weekend.  Hargrove recorded 27 kills on 51 attacks with four errors for a .451 hitting percentage at the tournament. 

 

Retriever Travels Takes Them to Home Of National Champions

UMBC’s travels took them to the home of the 2005 National Champions as UMBC visited the University of Washington for four games in the Husky Classic.  UMBC went 0-4 in the classic, including a three-set loss to the reigning NCAA champions.  UMBC also faced Gonzaga, Portland State and North Dakota State

 

UMBC Wins Colgate Classic with Best Start Since 2001

UMBC went 3-0 to start the season with wins over La Salle, Rider and Colgate, capturing the Colgate Classic title and posting its best start since the 2001 season.  UMBC swept all three teams as Sarah Ball and Kira Giles each made the all-tournament team of the invitational.  In 2001 UMBC went 5-0 to start the season before losing its next seven matches.  That year UMBC went 8-1 in the Northeast Conference regular season. 

 

Ashley Oscars Named America East Rookie of the Week for Fourth Consecutive Time

UMBC women’s volleyball freshman Ashley Oscars was named America East Conference Rookie of the Week for the fourth consecutive week.  Oscars in two matches recorded 5.38 kills per game (kpg), including setting a career high for the second consecutive week with 25 kills against preseason favorite Albany.

 

Oscars hit .241 on the week with 43 kills and 17 errors on 108 total swings. She opened the week with 18 kills at Hartford in a three-set win for UMBC. Oscars went on to conclude the week with a 25-kill performance in a five-set loss to Albany. Against Albany she added a service ace to tie her career high of 26 points in the match.

 

Ashley Oscars Claims Third Consecutive Rookie of the Week Award

UMBC freshman Ashley Oscars captured her third consecutive America East Conference Volleyball Rookie of the Week award for the week ending September 24, 2006.  Oscars set career highs in UMBC’s lone match of the week, tallying 24 kills, 26 points and a .407 hitting percentage.  Oscars tallied her best match to date this season as the rookie outside hitter tallied 4.80 kills per game and a .407 hitting percentage in a five-set loss to Morgan State. Oscars recorded 24 kills on 54 attacks with just two errors. She added a service ace, six digs and a solo block in the match, scoring 26 points. Oscars now has double-figure kills in her last eight matches and is averaging for the season 4.00 kills per game, 4.47 points per game and 1.47 digs per game.  Oscars won the award for a third straight week has UMBC has swept the rookie of the week award in all four weeks of the season.  Teammate Kira Giles won in week one. 

 

Two Retrievers Claim Weekly Honors

Two of UMBC’s freshman collected weekly honors by the America East Conference as Kira Giles was named America East Conference Setter of the Week and Ashley Oscars was tabbed America East Conference Rookie of the Week for the week ending September 17, 2006. 

 

Oscars earns the award for the conference's top rookie for the second-straight week as she garnered a spot on the Villanova Classic All-Tournament team last weekend after leading UMBC with 4.00 kills per game and 4.61 points per game. Oscars, who has double figure kills in her last seven matches, recorded 13 kills against Sacred Heart, 14 against Holy Cross and 13 against Villanova. Oscars had three service aces and two assisted blocks for 17.0 points in the UMBC win over Sacred Heart. Against Villanova, Oscars hit .281 with four errors on 32 attacks.

 

Giles continued to run the UMBC offense effectively last week as UMBC went 3-1 on the week, en route to winning her first-ever Setter of the Week award. Giles averaged 11.86 assists per game with 166 total assists on the week. Giles recorded 53 assists for her first 50-plus assist performance in UMBC’s 3-1 win over Loyola (Md.). Giles placed three Retrievers in double-figure kills in the match and recorded four kills on her own, with no errors on nine attacks (.444 hitting percentage).

 

Giles in the Retrievers’ three-set win over Sacred Heart handed out 32 assists to go with nine digs before setting a new career high against Holy Cross, handing out 54 assists to top her 53 mark earlier in the week. With 13 digs to go with her 54 assists, Giles tallied her seventh double-double of the year. Giles finished the week with 27 assists and eight digs against Villanova. For the season, Giles is averaging 10.91 apg, a pace that will place her third on UMBC’s single-season assists per game chart. She is adding 3.05 digs per game as well.

 

 

Ashley Oscars Captures Second Rookie of the Week Honors for UMBC

UMBC freshman Ashley Oscars (Bakersfield, Calif./Liberty) was named America East Conference Rookie of the Week for the week ending September 10, 2006.  The award is the second consecutive for UMBC as fellow freshman Kira Giles (Winnipeg, Canada/Glenlawn) won the honor the first week of the season. 

 

Oscars emerged as an outside hitter last week, averaging 3.73 kpg and 4.10 ppg in five matches last week. Oscars entered in the second game of a three-game match with Delaware, recording seven kills, eight digs and two service aces over the final two sets. Used as a reserve against Washington, Oscars once again recorded seven kills over the final two sets of the match.

 

Oscars joined the starting line up the final three matches of the week, recording double-digit kills in each match. She began with 15 kills against Gonzaga, recording three errors on 38 attacks for a .316 hitting percentage. She added 14 kills against Portland State and 13 against North Dakota State. Oscars added 1.47 digs per game and 0.33 blocks per game as well on the week.

 

Kira Giles Earns First Rookie of the Week Accolade of the Season

UMBC freshman Kira Giles (Winnipeg, Canada/Glenlawn) was named America East Conference Rookie of the Week for the first weekly awards of the 2006 season.  The Retriever freshman recorded 11.69 assists per game in the opening four matches en route to winning the league honors.  Giles earned a spot on the Colgate Classic All-Tournament team after leading UMBC to three sweeps and the tournament title with a double-double and a 12.65 assist per game mark.  

 

Giles opened the season with 37 assists, seven digs and two service aces against La Salle.  She went on to record 17 digs and 43 assists against Colgate and followed that up the same day with 33 assists, four digs and a service ace against Rider.  Giles against Towson recorded her second double-double of the season with 16 digs and 39 assists. In her first four games, she averaged 11.69 apg, 3.38 dpg and 0.54 bpg.
