UMBC Women’s Volleyball Rolls Over Maine, 3-1

    Sarah Fillmore led the Retriever offense with 17 kills in the win over Maine.

    ORONO, Maine—The UMBC women’s volleyball team (14-14, 6-5 AE) defeated host Maine, 3-1 (18-30, 30-23, 30-15, 33-31), on Friday night at Memorial Gymnasium.  The meeting echoes the last time the Retrievers played the Black Bears, when they improved to .500 on the season with a 9-9 record.  The Black Bears drop to 6-19 and 4-7 in the conference and are eliminated from playoff contention, while the Retrievers are still fighting for one of the last two spots in the tournament.

     

    Maine jumped to an early 1-0 lead, winning the first set 30-18 over the Retrievers, who had a .059 hitting percentage, as compared with Maine’s percentage of .286. 

     

    The Retrievers battled a tough Maine offense in the first minutes of the second set, but eventually tied the game at eight points apiece and hit an incredible .455 hitting percentage to win the set, 30-23. 

     

    The third set saw the Retrievers dominate on the court, with freshman outside hitter recording seven of her 17 total kills in the set.  The Retrievers won handily, by a score of 30-15.

     

    The final set saw six lead changes and 10 ties as the Retrievers pulled out the set and match win with a 33-31 victory.

     

    Fillmore led the three Retrievers who had double-digit kills, amassing 17 along with six digs, while sophomore outside hitter Sarah Ball recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs.  Freshman outside hitter Ashley Oscars also added 14 kills and five digs, while senior libero Jennifer Wylie led the Retrievers with 14 digs.

     

    The Black Bears were led by Lindsay Allman, who recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs. 

     

    The Retrievers conclude the regular season on the road as they face conference rival New Hampshire at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
