Oscars, Giles Garner America East Weekly Volleyball Honors

Kira Giles was named America East Setter of the Week.

Ashley Oscars earned her seventh America East Rookie of the Week award.

Boston-A pair of UMBC freshmen garnered America East weekly volleyball honors for the week ending Oct. 29, the conference announced Monday. Kira Giles was tabbed Setter of the Week for the second time, while Ashley Oscars earned her seventh Rookie of the Week award, tying teammate Sarah Ball's conference record, set last season.

 

Giles recorded her eighth double-double of the season as the Retrievers defeated Stony Brook on Sunday. Giles tied her match-high with 54 assists against the Seawolves and also added 14 digs. Last week, she averaged 11.75 assists per game for a total of 94 with 40 against Hartford on Friday. The freshman setter has three 50-plus assist performances on the season and is averaging 10.32 apg for a total of 619, which moves her into ninth place on the UMBC all-time career assists chart.  In conference play she is averaging 9.93 apg for a total of 139.

 

Oscars earns extended her streak to 19 consecutive games with double-figure kills after posting 3.50 kills per game, 4.44 points per game and 1.38 digs per game last week. Oscars opened the week against Hartford, tallying 12 kills against the Hawks with eight digs and three service aces. In the next match against Stony Brook, Oscars recorded 16 kills, three digs, four service aces and a block assist. The Retriever outside hitter has four 20-plus kill performances on the season and is averaging 4.28 kpg and 4.72 ppg on the year.  In conference play she is averaging 4.41 kpg, hitting .223 and recording 4.85 points per game.

 

Maine’s Laura Goettsch was named America East Player of the Week, rounding out the weekly conference honors.

 

The Retrievers (12-13, 5-4 America East) return to action on Sunday, Nov. 5, when they host America East rival Binghamton at 2 p.m. at UMBC RAC Arena.
