UMBC Women’s Volleyball Defeats Hartford, 3-0

    Angela Anderson led the Retrievers with a .565 hitting percentage, 14 kills, and 4 digs in the win over Hartford.

    Baltimore, Md.—The UMBC women’s volleyball team (11-13, 4-4 AE) defeated conference-foe Hartford (8-15, 0-8 AE) 3-0 with scores of 30-23, 30-20, 30-20 on Friday night at the UMBC RAC Arena.  The Retrievers are back at .500 in conference play, while Hartford has lost their last eight conference games.

    In the first set, the Hawks led until the Retrievers tied the set at seven points apiece and took their first lead with a score of 11-10 on a three point run behind sophomore middle blocker Ashley Hargrove’s serve.  The Retrievers took the lead for good at 21-17 and won the set point off a kill by senior middle blocker Jessie Folk for a score of 30-23.

     

    UMBC trailed once again in the second set and knotted the score at seven each and took the lead for the first time with a score of 9-8.  The Retrievers would take the lead and hold it for the win at a score of 12-11.  The Retrievers won the serve at 24-20 off a kill by redshirt sophomore outside hitter Angela Anderson and scored six successive points behind Folk’s serve for the 30-20 win.  Anderson and Hargrove scored the set point on block assists.

     

    In the third and final set, UMBC trailed the Hawks 6-1, then called a timeout and proceeded to score five straight points behind sophomore outside hitter Sarah Ball’s serve.  The Retrievers took the lead at 11-10 and would not relinquish it for the remainder of the match.  Freshman outside hitter Ashley Oscars won the serve for the Retrievers on a kill with the score 17-14, and proceeded to serve for eight consecutive points to give the Retrievers a 25-14 lead.  UMBC won the final set 30-20 on a service error by Hartford.

     

    Anderson led the Retrievers with a .565 hitting percentage, 14 kills, and 4 digs.  Oscars contributed 12 kills and eight digs, while Folk and Hargrove each tallied four service aces.  As a team, UMBC recorded 14 service aces in the match. 

     

    The Hawks were led by Jennifer Monroy who recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs. 

     

    UMBC takes to the road on Sunday when they travel to Stony Brook, NY to face-off against conference rival Stony Brook at 3 p.m.
