UMBC Women’s Volleyball Falls To Georgetown, 3-1

The UMBC women’s volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (23-30, 23-30, 32-30, 25-30) decision to Georgetown in non-conference volleyball action on Tuesday night at McDonough Arena.  The Hoyas snapped an eight game losing streak with the win and improve to 6-12 while UMBC falls to 9-10 on the season. 

 

The Retrievers dropped the first two sets 30-23 but rallied in the third set to take one from the host school.  After taking a 15-9 lead, the Retrievers allowed the Hoyas to tie the set the at 126 all.  After a back and forth affair down the stretch, Georgetown took a 30-29 lead on UMBC on a kill from Annie Connor. 

 

With the Hoyas one point from victory, Ashley Oscars recorded a kill followed by a service ace from Sarah Ball, putting UMBC up by one at 31-30.  On the ensuing point, Katie Fisher was called for a ball handling error, awarding the Retrievers the third set. 

 

Georgetown responded in the fourth set behind seven kills from Katherine Niesen en route to a 30-25 set win and the match at 3-1. 

 

UMBC was led by Oscars with 21 kills.  Oscars, however, tallied 15 errors on 58 swings for a .103 hitting percentage.  UMBC’s middle hitters had big games as Ashley Hargrove hit .526 with 11 kills and one error and Amanda Willey hit .600 with 10 kills and one error.  Ball also hit double figures with 14 kills.  She had a double-double with 11 digs.  Stacey Carroll recorded a double-double with 54 assists and 10 digs while Jennifer Wylie led the defense with 22 digs. 


Connor led the Hoyas with 18 kills and five blocks. Georgetown as a team hit .291 with just 14 hitting errors as opposed to 34 by the Retrievers. 

 

UMBC returns to action at home on Friday against New Hampshire at 4:30 pm at UMBC RAC Arena.
