Loretto, Pa. - The UMBC women’s volleyball team defeated St. Francis (Pa.) by a final score of 3-1 in non-conference volleyball action on Tuesday night.  The Retrievers, who have played their last seven matches on the road, moved to 8-9, 1-1 America East Conference on the season as they won 30-24, 24-30, 30-23, 30-15.  St. Francis (Pa.) drops to 11-11 on the year.

UMBC used a balanced attack in the winning effort as the usual names came up with strong numbers.  Senior captain Jennifer Wylie tallied 30 digs in the match for her third 30-plus dig performance on the year.  Freshman Ashley Oscars tallied a match-high 18 kills while Sarah Ball finished with a double-double at 12 kills and 11 digs and Stacey Carroll ran the UMBC offense with 49 assists.

UMBC took the first set behind six kills from Oscars and led wire-to-wire en route to the 30-24 win.  The Red Flash retaliated  in set two with their best set of the night, hitting .200 as a team with 11 kills for a 30-24 win and tying the match at 1-1.  UMBC in the set recorded 16 kills but struggled with 11 errors, opening the door for the Red Flashes’ win.

The Retrievers fixed their hitting problems in sets three and four, finishing strong with 12 or more kills by the team in both sets and less than six errors in each set.  UMBC took set three 30-23 behind five kills, no errors and a .357 hitting percentage from Angela Anderson.  UMBC cruised to a 30-15 fourth set win as 10 digs by Wylie and 6.5 team blocks, including two assisted and two solo blocks from Ashley Hargrove kept the Red Flash offense stagnant.

The Red Flash did not have a player in double figure kills as Anne Roosevelt and Kristen Buter each finished with eight kills to lead St. Francis (Pa.).

UMBC returns home for the first time since September 13, with the Retrievers host conference foe Maine in their America East Conference home opener on Friday afternoon at 4:00 pm.
