UMBC Women’s Volleyball Drops Five-Set Match To Albany, 3-2

Sarah Ball tallied a double-double at Albany on Sunday.

The UMBC women’s volleyball team (7-9, 1-1 America East) lost 3-2 (30-20, 28-30, 28-30, 30-23, 15-13) to Albany (8-8, 1-1 AE) on Sunday afternoon in America East Conference volleyball action at Albany’s University Gymnasium.  UMBC took a 2-1 set lead before Albany rallied in the fourth set and than broke a 10-10 tie to win the final set 15-13. 

 

With the score tied 10-10 in the fifth set, Ashley Crenshaw recorded one of her eight blocks on the day to break the tie and give the Great Danes a one point advantage.  Blair Buchanan’s kill gave the Great Danes a 12-10 advantage as UMBC was only able to come with in one point on kills by Sarah Ball and Ashley Oscars.  Oscars registered a kill to pull the Retrievers within one at 14-13 but it was Buchanan finishing the match with a kill on the final point. 

 

Buchanan finished with a triple double after tallying 14 kills, 58 assists and 13 digs.  Shelby Goldman led the Great Danes with 30 kills while Crenshaw finished with 10 kills.

 

Ashley Oscars tallied 25 kills to lead the Retrievers.   Angela Anderson added 15 kills while Ball tallied 11 kills and 10 digs for a double-double.  Jennifer Wylie recorded 25 digs to lead the UMBC defensive effort.  Stacey Carroll had a double-double as well with 59 assists and 15 digs. 

 

Albany took the first set 30-20 after jumping out to an early 8-1 advantage.  The Great Danes recorded 15 kills with four errors in the set for .256 hitting percentage.  UMBC rallied with 30-28 wins in sets two and three.  In set two Oscars tied the game at 27-27 with a kill, followed by Ashley Hargrove’s service ace and another Oscar’s kill to put UMBC up 29-27.  Crenshaw’s service error gave UMBC its last point of the set. 

 

In the third set UMBC broke a 27-27 tie with an Oscars’ kill followed by an Anderson kill and a service error by Shelby Goldman of the Great Danes.  UMBC hit .429 with 21 kills and three errors in the set.  Albany, however, hit .412 with 17 kills in the fourth set and forced eight UMBC errors to tie the match at 2-2 and than took the final set 15-13. 

 

UMBC returns to action at St. Francis (Pa.) on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
