UMBC Volleyball Splits On Final Day Of Villanova Classic

Ashley Hargrove hit .640 against Holy Cross with 16 kills.

The UMBC women’s volleyball team (6-7) split matches on the final day of the Villanova Classic, defeating Holy Cross before falling to Villanova.  In the first game of the day, UMBC defeated Holy Cross 3-1 with set scores of 30-26, 30-24, 25-30 and 30-17.  In the night cap, UMBC lost to the host school Villanova ,3-0, with set scores of  30-21, 30-24, 30-26.

 

Freshman Kira Giles was sensational at running the UMBC offense against Holy Cross, handing out 54 assists to go with 13 digs for a double-double.  Giles distributed all around the court, hitting sophomore middle hitter Ashley Hargrove for 16 kills and outside hitters Sarah Ball and Ashley Oscars for 15 and 14 kills, respectively.  Hargrove hit .640 in the match with no errors on 25 attacks.  Ball had 23 digs for a double-double.  Jennifer Wylie recorded her second 30-plus dig performance of the year with 32 digs. 

 

UMBC against Holy Cross hit .215 as a team with 8.5 team blocks, three service aces and 95 total digs.  Holy Cross was led by Christine Strawson with a match-high 20 kills.

 

UMBC’s match against Villanova went the other way for the Retrievers as UMBC was held to a .093 hitting percentage with Ashley Oscars the only UMBC player in double figures in kills.  Oscars finished with 13 kills and hit .281 with four errors on 32 attacks.  Sarah Ball was held to five kills and a .000 hitting percentage with five errors.  Giles handed out 27 assists while Mallorie Clary was the only Retriever with double figure digs at 11. 

 

Adrian Semrau led the Wildcats with 21 kills and a .525 hitting percentage.  Jenna Link handed out 28 assists and Amy Gulyas had 17 digs.  Villanova hit .257 and had 10 team blocks.
