UMBC Volleyball Falls In Final Two Matches At Husky Classic

The UMBC volleyball team (3-6) lost its final two matches as the University of Washington Husky Classic as the Retrievers fell to Portland State, 3-1 (30-23, 30-16, 24-30, 30-19), and to North Dakota State, 3-1 (30-32, 30-27, 30-19, 30-22) on Saturday.
UMBC won the third set against Portland State, forcing 11 errors in the third set. Portland State, however, hit .232 as a team and recorded a .239 hitting percentage in the fourth set to capture the victory. UMBC was led by freshman Ashley Oscars with 14 kills. Kira Giles recorded 32 assists and 10 digs while Jennifer Wylie tallied 20 digs. UMBC as a team had 10 blocks in the match, five assisted and two solo by Amanda Willie.
Against North Dakota State, UMBC captured the first set with a 32-30 victory but would drop the next three as North Dakota State took the win. Sarah Ball tallied double digit kills for the first time since the Colgate Invitational with 19 kills. She had a double-double with 18 digs as well. Sarah Fillmore had 15 kills and Oscars added 13. Giles recorded 43 assists and 10 digs while Wylie had 19 digs for UMBC.
The story of the match was North Dakota State’s Sheila Parrish who recorded 28 kills on 56 attacks for a .429 hitting percentage. She also had 25 digs in the match.
UMBC returns to action when they host Loyola (Md.) on Wednesday, September 13 at 7 p.m.
