No. 5 Ranked Defending National Champion Washington Huskies Hands UMBC Volleyball 3-0 Loss

    Jessie Folk hit .429 in two sets played against Washington.

    Seattle, Wash. - The UMBC women’s volleyball team (3-3) dropped a 3-0 (30-13, 30-19, 30-21) decision to the No. 5 ranked defending NCAA Champion Washington Huskies (6-1) on Friday afternoon in the Retrievers first game of the Washington Invitational in Seattle, Wash.  UMBC was held to a .044 hitting percentage in the match while the Huskies hit .343 as a team. 

     

    Washington jumped on UMBC from the beginning as the reigning champs scored 21 kills on 36 attacks with just three errors in the first game, hitting .500 as a team.  Washington’s defense also showed strong as UMBC on 32 attacks was held to just five kills and three errors, earning the Huskies a 30-13 set one win. 

     

    Errors plagued UMBC in the second set as 12 hitting errors, five service errors and two receiving errors contributed to 19 of the Huskies 30 points.  The Huskies only hit .147 with 10 kills in the set, but that was enough as they took the set 30-19. 

     

    In the final set, freshman Ashley Oscars recorded four kills on six attacks while Amanda Willey chipped in four kills.  UMBC, which recorded its best set with a .122 hitting percentage, fell victim to 18 kills by the Huskies, including seven by Stevie Mussie as Washington took the final set, 30-21. 

     

    UMBC was led b y Oscars and Sarah Ball with seven kills each.  Kira Giles tallied 20 assists while Jennifer Wylie chipped in 12 digs.  UMBC committed 12 service errors in the match. 

     

    Jill Collymore recorded12 kills while Mussie, Jessica Swarbrick and Janine Sandell each had eight kills.  Courtney Thompson dished out 35 assists and Tamari Miyashiro recorded 23 digs.  The Huskies had nine team blocks and 52 total digs in the match.
