Towson Edges UMBC Volleyball, 3-1

    Towson, Md.—The UMBC volleyball team saw its three-game winning streak to open the season halted, as host Towson (2-2) defeated UMBC (3-1), 3-1, at the Towson Center.

     

    The Tigers won the first two games by scores of 30-22 and 30-17, before UMBC came back for a 30-28 win in the third game. But the Retrievers could only manage six kills in the fourth game and Towson triumphed, 30-24 to take the match.

     

    UMBC, which hit brilliantly from the floor in winning the Colgate Invitational, hit only .071 in this match, with 44 kills and 32 errors. Sophomore Angela Anderson led the way with 13 kills and freshman Sarah Fillmore added 10, but sophomore Sarah Ball was held to a season-low nine kills.

     

    Ball did record one solo and six assisted blocks, and Amanda Willey added six assisted blocks. UMBC’s standout performer was senior Jennifer Wylie, who posted a staggering 31 digs defensively. Freshman setter Kira Giles had 39 assists and 16 digs.

     

    The Retrievers have the week off before playing their first home match, vs. Delaware on Tuesday, September 5.
