UMBC VOLLEYBALL DEFEATS RIDER AND COLGATE AT COLGATE INVITATIONAL

Against Rider (0-2) UMBC won by scores of 30-20, 30-7, 30-27. Sophomore Sarah Ball, the reigning America East Rookie of the Year, recorded her second double-double in as many games with 15 kills and 10 digs. She committed no errors and hit .405 in the match.
The Retrievers hit .330 as a team. Kira Giles recorded 33 assists, while Pam Jarrett posted 10 digs.
Ball had 17 kills and 13 digs to lead UMBC past Colgate (1-1) in the second match of the day by scores of 30-28, 30-22, 30-20.
Colgate opened up a 17-10 lead in the first game, but the Retrievers chipped away and used a late 9-3 run to take the lead for good at 28-27 on their way to a 30-28 victory. Ball had seven kills for UMBC in the first game, while Colgate junior Erin Kanetzke.
The second game proved very similar, as the Retrievers used a big 11-5 run midway through to cruise to the 30-22 victory. UMBC posted a .333 hitting percentage for the game, while Colgate managed just a .122 percentage.
In the third and final game, UMBC jumped ahead early and never looked back to take the match at 30-20. The Raider attack struggled in the game, finishing with a .089 hitting percentage, while the Retrievers hit .286.
Sarah Fillmore led the attack for UMBC with 18 kills, while Angela Anderson had 10. Jennifer Wylie led the defense with 21 digs and Giles had a match-high 43 assists to go along with 17 digs.
The Retrievers return to action Tuesday when they face local rival
