Ian Blanchard's Retrievers open the 2006 season at the Colgate Tournament on Friday.

Baltimore, Md. - The UMBC women’s volleyball team was selected finish in a tie for fourth place in the America East Conference Preseason Coaches' poll as announced by the America East Conference.  All voting was done by conference head coaches with none of the coaches allowed to vote for their own team.

Albany (35 votes) was selected to win the league followed by Binghamton (32), Stony Brook (21) and UMBC (18) and New Hampshire (18) in a tie for fourth.  Maine (17) and Hartford (6) rounded out the voting.

UMBC in 2006 returns 13 players including unanimous 2005 Rookie of the Year selection Sarah Ball.  Ball was a seven-time America East Conference Rookie of the Week and ranked in the top three in the conference in points per game and kills per game.

Ashley Hargrove and Amanda Willey also return as two of the top blockers in the league while Jen Wylie will take over as the Retrievers libero.  In three games as a libero last year, Wylie recorded 5.45 digs per game, notching 27 digs in one game and 25 in another match.  Jessie Folk returns for her senior year as well after joining UMBC’s single season assisted blocks chart in each of her three years.

Blanchard also likes the looks of his freshman newcomers as rookies Kira Giles, Asley Oscars, Pam Jarrett, Mallorie Clary and Sarah Fillmore all could make immediate impacts on the squad in 2006.

The Retrievers open the season on Friday, August 25 at the Colgate Tournament as they begin the season with LaSalle at 5 p.m.
