UMBC WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL HONORS SENIORS WITH 3-0 WIN OVER HARTFORD

    Megan Gross was one of two seniors honored on Friday night.

    Baltimore, Md. – The UMBC women’s volleyball team (11-17, 4-7 AE) defeated Hartford (8-21, 0-11 AE) on Senior Night at UMBC RAC Arena by a final score of 3-0 (30-14, 30-17, 30-23).  UMBC prior to the match honored departing seniors Megan Gross (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) and Christine Skala (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale South). 

     

    UMBC jumped out in the opening two sets against the Hawks, taking an 11-4 lead in the first set after back-to-back service aces by Sarah Ball (Winnipeg, Canada/Sisler) and a 10-3 lead in game two after three straight points with Skala serving.  UMBC hit .286 in the first set en route to a 30-14 win and .344 in the second set for a 30-17 win.

     

    In the third set the Hawks kept pace with UMBC, closing the Retriever lead to 11-9 with a kill by Jennifer Monroy and coming within one on the ensuing point on a Retriever error. 

     

    UMBC responded with back-to-back kills by Ball and a serving ace by Gross to push the lead to 15-10.  The Retrievers continued to hold their advantage taking a 30-23 set three victory.

     

    Ball led UMBC with 13 kills and a .458 hitting percentage.  Ashley Hargrove (Covington, Wash./Kentwood) tallied 11 kills and a .364 hitting percentage while Gross tallied 33 assists and nine digs and Skala recorded a team-high 10 digs.  Skala needs 12 digs to tie and 13 to break the Retriever all-time mark of 1,475 digs.   

     

    Hartford was led by Mary Francis Feldman with 10 kills and nine digs followed by nine kills from Monroy.  Brianne Paulson tallied 25 assists.  Hartford out blocked UMBC, 6-3.5 while UMBC out aced Hartford, 13-3.

     

    The Retrievers return to action on Sunday in their season finale against Binghamton at 1 p.m.
