UMBC WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL ANNOUNCES THE SIGNING OF KIRA GILES AND ASHLEY OSCARS TO NATIONAL LETTERS OF INTENT
Head coach Ian Blanchard announced the signings of two players for 2006.
Baltimore, Md. – UMBC Women’s Volleyball head coach Ian Blanchard announced the signings of Kira Giles (Winnipeg, Canada/Glenlawn) and Ashley Oscars (Bakersfield, Calif./Liberty) to National Letters of Intent to play volleyball at UMBC in 2006.
“We are absolutely thrilled about both of them,” said Blanchard. “Ashley and Kira are outstanding athletes. One of the things we wanted to do was improve the athleticism of our team and with both of them we feel we have done that. Both play in very competitive volleyball programs and will be able to make the natural progression to the next level.”
Giles is a setter out of
Giles has also been a member of the Big Sand Volleyball Club team since fifth grade, earning Provincial All Star accolades the last two years, helping lead her team to the National 18 Under title last season and being named to the All-Canadian All-Star team as a setter last year. Giles while earning those accolades was setting current Retriever and seven-time America East Conference Rookie of the Week, Sarah Ball (
“Kira is terrific athlete and has an exceptional feel for the game which is essential for the setting position,” Blanchard said. “She knows how to run an offense and will have every opportunity to come in and help us immediately.”
Oscars is an outside hitter from
Oscars, who plays club for the TCA Volleyball Club, is having an outstanding senior year, averaging 9.1 kills per match, 7.5 digs per match and 1.6 aces per match while leading her team to a 28-8-1 record. Oscars was named her schools Most Athletic Athlete this year.
