UMBC VOLLEYBALL FALLS TO STONY BROOK, 3-1

    Julia Hood and Jessie Folk each tallied double-digit kills on Sunday.

    Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook volleyball team defeated UMBC 3-1 (35-33, 30-21, 22-30, 30-16) on Sunday afternoon in America East Conference action. With the win, the Seawolves improve to 10-16 and 4-6 in the America East and move a half-game up on New Hampshire for the final America East Tournament spot. The loss drops the Retrievers to 10-17 and 3-7 in conference play and a full game behind the Seawolves in the league standings.

     

    UMBC let the first set slip away after jumping out to an 11-3 lead and holding game point at 29-27.  The Seawolves fended off a total of three game points by UMBC to rally for the 35-33 first set win.

     

    Stony Brook carried its momentum into the second set, breaking a 17-17 tie and going on a 13-4 run to conclude set two.  Morgan Sweany led the Seawolves with four kills and eight digs in the set. 

     

    UMBC rushed out to a 15-10 lead in the third game, before SB closed the gap to two at 16-14. The Retrievers answered with a Sarah Ball kill and went on for the game three win, 30-22.

     

    In the fourth, Stony Brook took an early 3-2 lead and never relinquished it, finishing with an 11-2 run for the four-set victory.

     

    Sweany and Noelle Bay pitched in double-doubles for the Seawolves, with Sweany knotching 13 kills and 23 digs and Bay adding 12 kills and 15 digs. Four Stony Brook players hit double-digit kills.

     

    Julia Hood led the way for UMBC recording a team-high 14 kills. Ball added 12 kills and 17 digs and Jessie Folk contributed 11 kills in the loss.  Megan Gross tallied 47 assists and 10 digs while Jennifer Wylie had a team-high 25 digs and Christine Skala tallied 18. 

     

    UMBC returns to action with Senior Night on Friday, November 11 at 7 p.m. in RAC Arena against Hartford.
