UMBC VOLLEYBALL’S SARAH BALL TABBED WITH SEVENTH AMERICA EAST CONFERENCE ROOKIE OF THE WEEK HONOR

10/24/2005

Sarah Ball has seven conference rookie of the week awards this year.

Boston, Mass. – UMBC women’s volleyball freshman Sarah Ball (Winnipeg, Canada/Sisler) has been named America East Conference Rookie of the Week for the week ending October, 23, 2005.  The award is Ball’s seventh conference honor and fifth straight.  Ball has earned the weekly honor in seven out of eight total weeks this season, the most weekly honors by a rookie in a season in conference history.

Last week, Ball recorded 3.43 kpg, 2.14 dpg and 4.43 ppg in two matches with the Retrievers. The rookie outside hitter extended her streak of double-digit kills to 20, with reaching the 10-plus kills mark in every collegiate match played in to date.

Ball against American University tallied 11 kills with six digs, adding a service ace and two block assists for 13.0 points in the match. Against New Hampshire in conference play, Ball recorded 18.0 points, with 13 kills, four service aces and two block assists. Ball added nine digs, coming one dig away from recording her 11th double-double of the year.

Ball’s four service aces match a single-game high for her as she recorded four in the season opener this year.  Her and fellow teammate Ashley Hargrove accounted for 10 of 17 service aces by UMBC last week.

Ball on the season is averaging 3.91 kpg, ranking third in the league.  Ball’s 4.57 ppg is second in the conference charts.
