AMERICAN SWEEPS UMBC VOLLEYBALL, 3-0 ON TUESDAY NIGHT

    Ashley Hargrove recorded 10 kills and a .450 hitting percentage on Tuesday night.

    Washington, D.C. – The UMBC women’s volleyball team (10-13) dropped a 3-0 (30-22, 30-24, 30-24) decision to American University (15-8) on Tuesday night in the Retrievers final regular season non-conference match of the year.  Despite the loss senior libero Christine Skala set a milestone, surpassing the 1,400 career digs mark with five digs, becoming the sixth Retriever all-time to reach 1,400 career digs.

     

    Skala has 1,401 career digs to date and needs 74 to reach the all-time mark.  Skala is 21 digs away from fifth place all-time on UMBC’s career charts. 

     

    UMBC struggled on the offensive end, hitting .111 in the match with 34 kills and 22 errors on 108 total attacks.  Sarah Ball recorded a team-high 11 kills while fellow freshman Ashley Hargrove hit double-digit kills with 10 in the match, recording a .450 hitting percentage with one error on 20 attacks. 

     

    Megan Gross and Stacey Carroll split the setting with Gross finishing with 15 assists and Carroll with 11.  Jennifer Wylie recorded 10 digs. 

     

    Rubena Sukaj led the Eagles attack with a .609 hitting percentage and a match-high 16 kills.  Cutrina Biddulph finished with 14 kills and a .394 hitting percentage as the Eagles tallied 51 kills and a .315 team hitting percentage in the match. 

     

    UMBC returns to action at home on Sunday as the Retrievers host New Hampshire at 1 p.m. in RAC Arena.
