UMBC VOLLEYBALL DROPS CONFERENCE OPENER TO BINGHAMTON, 3-0

    Ashley Hargrove tallied a .556 hitting percentage with 10 kills, two blocks and two service aces Friday night.

    Baltimore, Md. – The UMBC women’s volleyball team (6-10, 0-1 AE) lost in their America East Conference opener to Binghamton (9-9, 1-0 AE) by a final of 3-0 (30-27, 30-28, 30-26) at UMBC RAC Arena on Friday night.  Binghamton’s Katie Brody tallied a match-high 19 kills while UMBC’s Sarah Ball (Winnipeg, Canada/Sisler) finished with a team-high 16 kills. 

     

    The first two sets played very close with set one featuring 11 ties and four lead changes before Binghamton broke a 26-26 tie with a kill by Katie Robertson, fueling three straight points and an eventual 30-27 victory. 

     

    Set two stayed even closer with 16 ties and five lead changes leading up to a 25-25 tie.  A service error by UMBC’s Stacey Carroll (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) followed by a kill from Brody allowed the Bearcats to open a two-point advantage and hold on for the 30-28 win.

     

    The Bearcats in set three took the lead early with a kill by Jacki Kane to surge ahead, 5-4, as Binghamton never allowed UMBC to tie the match the rest of the way and cruise to the three set sweep. 

     

    For the match Ball added six digs and two block assists to her 16 kills for the Retrievers.  Carroll tallied 27 assists while Ashley Hargrove (Covington, Wash./Kentwood) hit .556 with 11 kills and one error on 18 total attacks.  Hargrove added two service aces and two assisted blocks for the Retrievers.

     

    Kane for the Bearcats finished with seven total blocks after entering the match leading the conference in blocks per game at 1.28.  Kane added 10 kills to her night.  Kathleen Schauer tallied 11 kills while Ashley Meffert dished out 49 assists with 12 digs. 

                                                                                            

    Binghamton hit .341 (57 kills, 14 errors, 126 attacks) compared to a .260 (48 kills, 16 errors, 123 attacks) hitting percentage by the Retrieves.  Binghamton out blocked UMBC nine to 5.5 while the Retrievers out aced the Bearcats, 11 to six. 

     

    UMBC returns to action when they host Maine on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 1 p.m.
