Angela Anderson was honored with all-tournament honors at Rutgers last weekend.

Baltimore, Md.The UMBC volleyball team looks to break a four match skid this week as they take on a couple of local foes in Coppin State and Morgan State.  UMBC’s match against Morgan State on Friday night is the beginning of four consecutive Retriever home matches.  News and notes this week looks at the road ahead and Angela Anderson’s big week earning all-tournament honors at the Rutgers’ Embassy Suites Classic.

UMBC Takes On Pair of Local Foes

The Retrievers take on a pair of local programs this week as they travel to Coppin State on Tuesday night for a 7 p.m. match-up prior to hosting Morgan State on Friday night.  UMBC has taken on both programs in each of the last three years, going a combined 6-0, including two three-set sweeps last season.  Morgan State this Friday will be the beginning of four consecutive home matches for the Retrievers.

UMBC Drops Four Straight Matches

One week after going 3-0 and returning to .500 the Retrievers dropped four consecutive matches, falling at home to Towson, 3-0 and losing all three contests at the Embassy Suites Classic hosted by Rutgers. 

 

Towson 3, UMBC 0 (30-17, 30-21, 30-19)

The UMBC volleyball team fell to local rival Towson by a final count of 3-0 (30-17, 30-21, 30-19) on Tuesday night at RAC Arena as the Tigers won their ninth straight match while snapping a three match win streak by the Retrievers.  UMBC was led by Jessie Folk, who registered 10 kills with a .318 hitting percentage and eight digs in the match.  Stacey Carroll handed out 18 assists in two sets played.  Freshman Ashley Hargrove recorded eight kills and a solo block.  The Tigers controlled the match, out-blocking UMBC, 16-8 and out-digging the Retrievers 47-26.  Towson finished with a .306 attack percentage with 47 kills in 98 total attempts.  The Retrievers hit .069 with 28 kills and 21 errors on 101 attempts. 

 

Fairfield 3, UMBC 2 (30-19, 22-30, 33-31, 30-27, 15-9)

The UMBC Volleyball team fell to Fairfield, 3-2 (30-19, 22-30, 33-31, 27-30, 15-9) on Friday night to open the Embassy Suites Classic at Rutgers University.  The Retrievers were led by Angela Anderson with 28 kills and a .352 hitting percentage while Christine Skala had 26 digs and Stacey Carroll recorded a double-double with 55 assists and 12 digs.  UMBC hit .208 in the match compared to .227 by Fairfield as UMBC out-aced Fairfield, 9-4. 

 

Rutgers 3, UMBC 0 (30-19, 30-18, 30-25)

Temple 3, UMBC 1 (23-30, 30-27, 30-12, 30-27)

The UMBC women’s volleyball team dropped back-to-back matches to Rutgers, 3-0 (30-19, 30-18, 30-25) and Temple, 3-1 (23-30, 30-27, 30-12, 30-27) to conclude its portion of the Embassy Suites Classic hosted by Rutgers University on Saturday.  Angela Anderson and Julia Hood led the Retrievers on Saturday with Anderson tallying 24 total kills and Hood 27 total kills in the two matches. 

 

The Retrievers in the final match of the day looked strong, taking the first set from Temple, 30-23.  The Owls, however, turned the tides on UMBC with the final three sets and tallying a team hitting percentage of .354 in the match.  Christine Demarco led the Owls with a .519 hitting percentage and 16 kills.  UMBC as a team hit .182, despite a .421 hitting percentage and 11 kills from Britney Hodson.  Anderson tallied 13 kills in the match and Hood finished with 15.  Christine Skala against Temple recorded 17 digs and Stacey Carroll handed out 41 assists. 

 

UMBC fell in consecutive sets for just the second time this season as Rutgers swept the Retrievers in three.  Anderson finished with 11 kills and Hood tallied 12 kills.  Seven of Hood’s 12 kills came in the third set as she went 7-for-9 in the set with a .778 hitting percentage.

Angela Anderson Named To Embassy Suites All-Tournament Team

Redshirt freshman Angela Anderson was named to the Rutgers’ Embassy Suites Classic All-Tournament team after posting 4.33 kpg and 4.71 ppg at the tournament.  Anderson had a career match with 28 kills against Fairfield, hitting .352 with four digs and a block assist.  Anderson on the week averaged 4.00 kpg with two service aces, four total blocks and 12 digs. 

 

Conference Play Just Around The Corner

UMBC’s conference slate is just around the corner with the Retrievers’ America East opener at home against Binghamton on Sept. 30.  UMBC hosts on Oct. 2 Maine at 1 p.m. that same weekend.  The Retrievers have three matches to gear up for the league opener with Coppin State and Morgan State this week and George Washington next Tuesday night.

A number of Retrievers early on are listed among the America East Conference chart leaders.  Katrina Carrick ranks second in hitting percentage at .368, Stacey Carroll second in assists at 11.50 per game and Sarah Ball third in kills with 3.86 per game and points at 4.57 per game.

Ball Repeats As America East Rookie of the Week (9-12-05)

Sarah Ball continued her hot streak to start the season, averaging 4.38 kpg and 5.15 ppg in three matches last week. Ball tallied two more double-doubles and extended her double-digit kill streak to eight games as the rookie notched 2.46 digs per game last week. Ball against Delaware hit .300 with 21 kills and six errors on 50 attacks, leading the Retrievers from a two-set deficit to a 3-2 come-from-behind win. Ball recorded 14 digs and 23.5 points in the match. Ball's streak of consecutive double-doubles to begin her career was snapped at six after tallying 13 kills and eight digs against St. Peter’s. Ball finished the week with 23 kills, 10 digs and 26.0 points against La Salle as UMBC took that match, 3-2.

 

Ball Earns America East Rookie of the Week Honors, Named to George Mason All-Tournament Team (9-4-05)

UMBC freshman Sarah Ball earned America East Rookie of the Week honors and was named to the George Mason Invitational All-Tournament team on Sept. 3.  Ball recorded 4.62 kpg and 3.23 digs per game (dpg) in the three matches at the invitational.  Ball recorded three double-doubles in the tournament to increase her streak to five matches with a double-double.

 

Carroll Emerges With Big Weekend At George Mason Invitational

Retriever sophomore Stacey Carroll has recorded a stellar weekend at the George Mason Invitational, recording 11.46 assists per game and 149 total assists in three matches.  Carroll recorded 59 assists Cal Poly to set the tournament mark for most assists in a single match.  Carroll also tied the mark for most service aces with five against Loyola (Md.). 

 

13 Home Matches Highlight 2005 Schedule

UMBC hosts 13 home matches in 2005 including two tri-matches.  The Retrievers opened the season with a tri-match against Northeastern and Villanova.  After going on the road for four matches UMBC will return home to face St. Peter’s and LaSalle in another tri-match on Sept. 10.  Other highlighted dates included local rival Towson, where current head coach Ian Blanchard served as an assistant coach last year, on Sept. 13, Binghamton as the conference opener on Sept. 30, last year’s conference champion Albany on Oct. 28 and the home finale against Hartford which will include senior night ceremonies on Nov. 11.

Christine Skala Moves Into Sixth All-Time on Career Digs Chart

Christine Skala currently leads all active Retrievers in career digs with the sixth best mark all-time.  The senior libero is now chasing fifth place all-time held by Jen Jewell with 1,422 digs.  Skala entering the week has 1,215 career digs.

Folk Enters The Top-10 For Total Blocks All-Time

Jessie Folk entered the top-10 for total blocks all-time, surpassing Dawn Garnes and Pam Lottes, who held the 10th mark all-time with 182 total blocks.  Folk now has 195 career total blocks.
