UMBC VOLLEYBALL MOVES BACK TO .500 WITH SWEEP OF TRI-MATCH AGAINST ST. PETER’S AND LA SALLE ON SATURDAY

Baltimore, Md. – The UMBC volleyball team (4-4) defeated St. Peter’s (2-4), 3-1 (30-25, 30-14, 26-30, 30-27) and beat La Salle (5-3), 3-2 (30-27, 25-30, 30-23, 25-30, 15-8) to sweep the tri-match at UMBC.  La Salle defeated St. Peter’s, 3-1 (30-19, 27-30, 30-23, 30-18) in the other match on the day.  UMBC moved back to .500 on the season and have a three match win streak heading into Tuesday nights match against local rival Towson. 

 

The day ended with a five-set thriller between UMBC and La Salle.  The Retrievers went up a set twice in the match, winning sets one and three.  UMBC was led by Sarah Ball’s 23 kills and 10 digs, for her seventh double-double of the year.  Julia Hood off the bench tallied 10 kills and Amanda Willey hit double-digits with 10 kills as well.  Christine Skala recorded 23 digs while Stacey Carroll handed out 39 assists with 18 digs.    

 

The Explorers, behind the play of Christa Dominick and Kristen Kelsey, who each registered 18 kills in the match, won sets two and three to force a fifth set.  UMBC in the final set hit .316 with seven kills and one error en route to the 15-8 win and match victory.

 

UMBC began the day with a 3-1 win over St. Peter’s.  Ball saw her double-double streak snapped at six games to start her career, tallying 13 kills and eight digs.  Carroll handed out 43 assists while Ashley Hargrove made her presence felt with nine assisted blocks as UMBC tallied 16 total blocks as a team.  Willey in her first action with the Retrievers recorded five assisted blocks and a solo. 

 

St. Peter’s was led by Serra Soylu and Tara Teslaa with 14 kills each and 42 assists by Alma Qose.  The Peahens were held to a .180 hitting percentage with 30 errors and 55 kills. 

 

In the match between La Salle and St. Peter’s, each team took a set to start the game only to see the Explorers pull away with the final two sets, including a .412 hitting percentage in the fourth set.  Dominick tallied 18 kills and Caitlin Connor dished out 54 assists to pace the Explorers.  The Peahens were led by 12 kills from Soylu and 11 from Teslaa.
