UMBC VOLLEYBALL FALLS TO CAL POLY IN FIVE SETS TO SPLIT ON DAY ONE OF THE GEORGE MASON INVITATIONAL

    Angela Anderson finished with 19 kills and a .421 hitting percentage against Cal Poly.

    Fairfax, Va.  The UMBC women’s volleyball team (1-3) took Cal Poly (2-1) to the limit but fell 3-2, (30-24, 18-30, 30-28, 24-30, 15-11) as they split action on the day at the George Mason Invitational.  Sarah Ball (Winnipeg, Canada/Sisler) racked up a game-high 24 kills with 14 digs for her fourth double-double on the season.  UMBC, who defeated Loyola (Md.), 3-1(30-27, 30-23, 25-30, 30-16) to open the day, concludes their play in the George Mason Invitational on Saturday with Texas Christian U. at 12:30 p.m.

     

    Christine Skala (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale South) led the UMBC defense as the senior libero tallied 20 digs in the match allowing teammate Stacey Carroll (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) to dish out a career-high 59 assists.  Carroll tallied 55 assists earlier in the day to record 114 in two matches.  Carroll added 10 digs earlier in the day as well and recorded 11 digs against Cal Poly for two double-doubles on the day.

     

    Angela Anderson (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Bishop Montgomery) finished wit 19 kills, hitting .421 in the five set match.  Anderson in 38 attacks committed just three errors to go with her 19 kills. 

     

    Katrina Carrick (San Diego, Calif./Morse) scored 11 kills with four blocks while Ashley Hargrove (Covington, Wash./Kent) finished with eight kills and four blocks. 

     

    UMBC out hit Cal Poly in the match, finishing with a .299 hitting percentage and 70 kills compared to a .228 hitting percentage by Cal Poly. 

     

    Earlier in the day UMBC defeated Loyola (Md.), 3-1 to earn new head coach Ian Blanchard his first win as a collegiate head coach.  The Retrievers cruised to a 3-1 (30-27, 30-23, 25-30, 30-16) win over the Greyhounds in the opening. 

     

    Ball notched 19 kills and 17 digs for a double-double and fueled the Retrievers offense that hit .299 as a team with 65 kills.  Carroll dished out 54 assists with Carrick recording 13 kills and Hargrove scoring nine kills.  Skala added 17 digs as well.
