INCOMING FRESHMAN SARAH BALL PICKS UP CANADIAN 18 AND UNDER VOLLEYBALL OPEN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

5/13/2005

Incoming freshman Sarah Ball, who signed a National Letter of Intent to play Volleyball at UMBC starting the fall of 2005, added another pre-collegiate accolade as she was a member of the Canadian 18 and Under Open National Championship team.  Ball, who plays and is a captain for the Big Sand 18 club team, won the national title on May 8th.

Ball and her younger brother Sean Bailey (13 years old) were featured in the Winnipeg Free Press with both winning national championships in a one-week span.  Ball’s Big Sand 18 squad claimed the championship game in three sets, 29-27, 18-25 and 15-9.

Ball, 6’0”, is a right side power hitter from Sisler High School in Winnipeg Manitoba, Canada.  Prior to the Canadian Nationals, Ball earned the “Mike Burchuck award”, which is given to the top graduating female volleyball athlete in the Winnipeg Manitoba Area.  As a senior, Ball was ranked fourth out of all high school players in the province and earned a spot in the graduating all-star game and named to the All-Manitoba team.  Ball led her team in passing, digs and attacks en route to the conference final in which they lost by two points in five sets.

Ball is one of two signed recruits for the fall of 2005, with UMBC signing Ashley Hargrove to a National Letter of Intent back in April as well.
