4/27/2005

Head Coach Ian Blanchard has added two new faces for the 2005 season.

Baltimore, Md. – UMBC Volleyball Head Coach Ian Blanchard announced the signing of Ashley Hargrove (Covington, Wash./Kentwood High School) to a National Letter of Intent to play volleyball for the Retrievers in the Fall of 2005.  Hargrove is a 6’1” middle blocker who joins previously signed 6’0” outside hitter Sarah Ball (Winnipeg Manitoba, Canada/Sisler High School) as the Retrievers 2005 recruiting class.

“Ashley comes from an elite volleyball club and her ability, height and work ethic will bring immediate impact to our program,” said head coach Ian Blanchard.  “We are very excited to have signed both Ashley and Sarah because they are very competitive individuals who have already shown the ability to compete at a high level and should gel quickly with our program and the direction we are heading.”

Hargrove finished her senior year ranking in the top-10 in blocks, kills percentage and aces in the South Puget Sound League (SPSL North) this past fall.  Hargrove finished second in kills percentage, fourth in aces and eighth in blocks, earning second runner-up in the league MVP voting and capturing first team all-league.

Hargrove led her 2004 squad to eighth place in the State Championship Tournament, earning King County Journal All-Area Team.  Her play during the state tournament deemed her Prep Athlete of the Week by the King County Journal and her performance at the District playoffs led to Prep Athlete of the Week by the Seattle Post Intelligencer.

Hargrove also earned first team all-league as a junior with the second highest kills percentage and ninth best kills per game average in the SPSL North.

In addition to her high school prep career, Hargrove has spent the past four years in club volleyball, playing the last three for the elite KJ Volleyball Club program.  Hargrove in the May of 2004 was named o the all-tournament team at the Emerald City Classic held at the University of Washington.
