Senior Julia Waclawiak is one of two seniors to be honored next Saturday night for Volleyball Senior Night.

Baltimore, Md.News and Notes this week keeps an eye on the latest 3,000 career assists member as Megan Gross goes for second place all-time, Christine Skala aims for 1,000 career digs while the Retrievers bid farewell to seniors Julia Waclawiak and Jocelyn Teoh on Senior Night, Saturday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m.

RETRIEVERS HOST SENIOR NIGHT IN WEEKEND FINALE

The UMBC women’s volleyball team will host senior night in their weekend finale match against Hartford this Saturday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m.  The Retrievers will honor seniors Jocelyn Teoh (Puchong, Maylasia/Bukit Jalil Sports Academy) and Julia Waclawiak (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Reagan).  Teoh ranks on five UMBC career top-10 charts, including fifth all-time on UMBC’s career kills chart with 1,257 heading into her final week.  Teoh also ranks on four single-season charts and has 39 career double-doubles.  Waclawiak is a member of two career top-10 charts, ranking in the top-10 in matches played at 112 and for service aces with 163.  Waclawiak in 2003 recorded UMBC’s eighth best single-season mark for service aces with 65 as she ranked 24th in the nation.  UMBC will also play host to Northeastern this weekend on Friday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m.

TOUGH WEEKEND BOUNCES RETRIEVERS OUT OF CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT HUNT

With losses to Binghamton and Albany last weekend the Retrievers were eliminated from America East Conference Tournament competition as Albany, Northeastern, Binghamton and Maine have all locked up spots in the four-team field.  Albany with their win over UMBC also clinched a first place conference finish and will host the conference tournament the weekend over Nov. 19-20.  For the week Jocelyn Teoh (Puchong, Malaysia/Bukit Jalil sports Academy) recorded two double-doubles and Megan Gross (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) tied her season-high with 56 assists.

 GROSS REACHES 3,000 ASSISTS, EYES SECOND PLACE ALL-TIME HEADING INTO FINAL WEEKEND

Megan Gross (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) broke the 3,000 career assists barrier as the junior setter handed out 78 assists last weekend and has 3,016 for her career.  Gross is 18 assists away from taking over third place all-time which is currently held by Heather Hollidge with 3,034.  Gross is averaging 10.03 assists per game this season.  Gross also went over the 1,000 assists mark for the season for the second consecutive year.  Gross on the year has amassed 1,033 assists

TEOH EXTENDS DOUBLE-DOUBLE STREAK TO FIVE STRAIGHT            

Jocelyn Teoh (Puchong, Maylasia/Bukit Jalil Sports Academy) tallied two more double-doubles last week and extended her streak to five-consecutive matches.  Over that span Teoh is averaging 4.40 kills per game and 2.20 digs per game.  Teoh last week recorded 23 kills and 12 digs against Binghamton and followed that up with an 11-kill 11-dig performance against Albany.  Megan Gross (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) recorded a double-double as well last week with 56 assists and 16 digs against Binghamton.  For the season Teoh has 19 double-doubles and Gross has recorded 12.

TEOH GOES OVER 1,250 CAREER KILLS

Senior Jocelyn Teoh (Puchong, Maylaysia/Bujit Jalil Sports Academy), who became the sixth member of the UMBC Volleyball 1,000 Career Kills Club earlier this season, went over 1,250 career kills, becoming the fifth Retriever ever to reach at least 1,250 career kills.  Teoh went past the mark last week in the Retrievers match against Albany.  For the week the senior outside hitter dropped 34 kills.   Teoh, who started the season with 881 career kills, has tallied 376 to date this season and holds a career kills mark of 1,257.  Dana Eberly ranks fourth with 1,311 career kills.

RETRIEVERS ON AMERICA EAST CONFERENCE CHARTS

Emily Berman (Towson, Md./Towson) and Jocelyn Teoh (Puchong, Maylasia/Bukit Jalil Sports Academy) rank fifth and sixth on the America East kills chart with Berman averaging 3.67 kills per game and Teoh with 3.65 kpg.  A number of other Retrievers are showing up in various categories as well with Megan Gross (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) ranking fifth in assists per game at 10.03, Christine Skala (Hinsdale, Ill/Hinsdale South) ranking eighth in digs per game at 3.47 and Teoh in 10th with 3.08 digs per game.  Berman ranks third in service aces at 0.47 and Teoh ranks fifth at 0.42 per game. 

 

GROSS TAKES OVER SEVENTH ON ALL-TIME ASSISTED BLOCKS CHART

Junior Megan Gross (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) moved into seventh place on the all-time Retrievers’ career assisted block charts.  Sophomore Jessie Folk (S. Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) and senior Jocelyn Teoh (Punchong, Malaysia/Bukit Jalil Sports Academy) also rank on the Retrievers top-10 chart for career assisted blocks.  Folk has 145 career blocks and ranks fifth while Teoh leads all active players in career assisted blocks with 174 and is fourth all-time.

TEOH ONE OF FOUR RETRIEVERS TO EVER REACH 1,000 KILLS, 200 BLOCKS AND 100 SERVICE ACES

Jocelyn Teoh (Punchong, Malaysia/Bukit Jalil Sports Academy) earlier this year became the fourth Retriever to achieve, 1,000 kills, 200 blocks and 100 service aces.  The others are Kelly O’Brien (2,161 kills, 251 blocks, 174 aces), Lisa Cline (1,869 kills, 208 blocks, 160 aces) and Rehena Rentuma (1,064 kills, 365 blocks, 189 aces).  Teoh last week added to her total blocks top-10 ranking with nine and now has 219 on the season.

WACLAWIAK IN SEVENTH PLACE ALL-TIME FOR CAREER SERVICE ACES

Senior Julia Waclawiak (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Regan) leads all active Retrievers in career service aces as with an ace last weekend the senior outside hitter increased her career total to 163.  Last season  Waclawiak recorded the Retrievers eighth best individual serving season with 65 aces, ranking 24th in the nation at 0.59 per game.  Waclawiak this season has 22 aces and needs five to move past Tracey Cullins for sixth all-time.

SKALA AIMS FOR 1,000 CAREER DIGS THIS WEEKEND

Christine Skala (Hinsdale, Ill./Hindsdale South) is looking to become the seventh Retriever in program’s history to reach 1,000 career digs as she needs a mere 10 digs to join the 1,000 digs club.  Skala over the past three matches is averaging an impressive 4.75 digs per game.  Jocelyn Teoh (Puchong, Malaysia/Bukit Jalil Sports Academy) and Megan Gross (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) joined the top-10 list two weeks ago.

Jessie Folk (S. Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) trails herself by five assisted blocks for fourth place on the Retrievers single-season assisted blocks chart.  Folk aided in the rejection of six attacks last week and now has 70 assisted blocks on the year.  Folk in her freshman season recorded 75 assisted blocks for a fourth place single-season ranking.
