UMBC JUNIOR MEGAN GROSS SURPASSES 3,000 CAREER ASSISTS IN RETRIEVERS 3-0 LOSS TO ALBANY

11/6/2004

Albany, N.Y. – UMBC’s Megan Gross (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) became the third Retriever in UMBC women’s volleyball history to surpass 3,000 career assists as the junior setter handed out 22 against Albany on Saturday night.  The Retrievers (12-17, 3-9 America East), however, came up on the short end as the Great Danes (24-5, 12-0 America East) swept UMBC in three sets (20-30, 20-30, 25-30) to stay perfect in league play.

Gross dropped 56 assists the night before against the University of Binghamton to move within six assists of 3,000.  Gross after dishing out 22 tonight now has 3,014 for her career, 20 behind second place on the Retrievers all-time charts.

For the match, Ashley Hunter led the Great Danes offensively with 15 kills while Ashley Green chipped in 10. On the defensive side, Ashley DeNeal notched a team-high 16 digs while Susan Spierre and Shelby Goldman each recorded three block assists. Blair Buchanan tallied a game-high 39 assists to go along with 11 digs defensively.  Albany won their 18th straight match and clinched the top seed and home court advantage for the conference tournament held in two weeks.

UMBC received 11 kills and 11 digs from Jocelyn Teoh (Puchong, Malaysia/Bukit Jalil Sports Academy) and 16 digs from Christine Skala (Hinsdale, Ill./South Hinsdale.).  Skala, who set a career-high of 26 digs two matches ago, is averaging an impressive 4.75 digs per game over her last three games and needs 10 digs to become UMBC’s seventh player to reach 1,000 digs for their career.

UMBC, who was officially eliminated from conference tournament contention last night against Binghamton, will finish their season at home when they host Northeastern on Friday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. and Hartford on Nov. 14 for Senior Night at 7 p.m. at UMBC RAC Arena.
