RETRIEVERS FALL TO NEW HAMPSHIRE VOLLEYBALL, 3-1

10/30/2004

Baltimore, Md. – The UMBC Women’s Volleyball team (12-15, 3-7 America East) lost a 3-1 (30-20, 25-30, 31-29, 30-27) decision to New Hampshire (7-18, 3-7 America East) on Saturday night at UMBC RAC Arena.  The Retrievers had a chance to win each of the final two sets but were held off by the Wildcats, who pull even with the Retrievers in the America East standings with the win.  Junior Christine Skala recorded a career single-game high of 26 digs in the match for UMBC.

The Retrievers fell behind in the first set hitting .143 as a team with 13 kills and eight errors.  The Wildcats took advantage with a .400 hitting percentage and 17 kills to cruise to a first game victory of 30-20.  The Retrievers rallied in the second game with 17 kills of their own and three service aces, two by Jocelyn Teoh, to claim the second set, 30-25.

In set three the Retrievers broke a 23-23 tie as Andrea Clarke served UMBC to four-consecutive points and a 27-23 advantage.  The Wildcats, however, tallied eight of the sets remaining 10 points to snag the set and go ahead two sets to one.

The Retrievers, much like the third set, held a 25-19 advantage before an 11-2 run by the Wildcats ended the Retrievers hopes of sending the match to a fifth set.

For the match, Teoh recorded 20 kills and 12 digs while Megan Gross handed out 41 assists and tallied 15 digs for UMBC.

Erin Walker tallied a team-high 18 kills for the Wildcats while Kate Weidner tallied 50 assists.  Jen Williams finished with 24 digs as well.

The Retrievers return to action next Friday night when they travel to Albany on Oct. 23 at 7 p.m.
