Baltimore, Md. – The UMBC Women’s Volleyball team (12-14, 3-6 America East) lost to America East Conference foe Maine (12-9, 6-3 America East), 3-0 (30-28, 30-28, 30-26) on Friday night at UMBC RAC Arena.  Maine with the win sweeps the regular season series, 2-0, and has defeated the Retrievers in their last three meetings.

Retrievers seemed to fall behind in all three matches, trailing by 19-11 in the first set, 12-7 in the second set and 18-9 in the third set, before making runs in each set that came up short each time.

In the first set the Retrievers closed the gap to 27-25 on a Jessie Folk kill and later 29-28 before Maine’s Leah Guidinger (nine kills) closed the door on the first set with a kill and a 30-28 Black Bear victory.  The second set played out much the same with UMBC’s Megan Gross dropping a kill to pull the Retrievers within one at 29-28.  The Black Bears received their second game lift from Brittany Howe, who notched the game-winning kill for a set two, 30-28, victory.

After trailing 18-9 in the third set the Retrievers put together a run that closed the deficit to 22-18 as Britney Hodson capped off the Retrievers’ 9-4 run with a kill from Gross.  The Black Bears, however, once again held the Retrievers off down the stretch, finishing the final with Kaili Jordan ending the match with her 11th kill on the night.

The Retrievers were led by Jocelyn Teoh and Julia Hood with match-highs of 14 kills each.  Megan Gross recorded 31 assists and Christine Skala tallied 11 digs.

Howe and Shannan Fotter dropped team-highs of 12 kills apiece while Shelly Seipp assisted 39 times on the night.  The Black Bears stayed consistent throughout the night, recording 18 kills in set one, 21 in set two and 17 in the final set, hitting .368 for the night.

UMBC recorded team marks of 15 kills in set one, 13 in set two and 20 in set three, hitting .258 as a team.

The Retrievers return to action with New Hampshire on Saturday night at 7 p.m. at RAC Arena.
