VOLLEYBALL NEWS AND NOTES

Junior Megan Gross recorded her ninth double-double of the season last week against Albany.

Baltimore, Md.News and Notes this week takes a look ahead at the Retrievers’ three upcoming home matches this week and the start of the second half of the America East Conference Schedule.  Other news includes the Retrievers placing four players in the top-10 on the AE service aces per game chart and Megan Gross within 200 assists of 3,000 for her career plus much more. 

LOOKING AHEAD


 RETRIEVER VOLLEYBALL BEGINS SECOND HALF OF CONFERENCE SLATE ON TUESDAY

The Retrievers will begin the second half of the America East Conference schedule on Tuesday night when the Retrievers will host Stony Brook at UMBC RAC Arena at 7 p.m.  The Retrievers will have the benefit of playing five of their final seven regular season games at home including three this week.  The Retrievers in addition to Stony Brook host Maine on Friday night and New Hampshire on Saturday night with game times set for 7 p.m. in both matches.  UMBC lost to Stony Brook in three sets earlier this year and Maine in four sets.   The Retrievers in their first match-up with New Hampshire beat the defending America East Conference Champions in a five sets.  The Retrievers will need to get hot in a hurry if they plan to make the four-team conference tournament after going 2-5 during the first half of the AE regular season.

ALBANY RALLIES FROM FIRST SET DEFEAT FOR 3-1 WIN OVER RETRIEVERS

The UMBC Retrievers dealt Albany) their first set loss in conference play but dropped the final three sets as the Great Danes stayed perfect in league play with a 3-1 (29-31, 30-22, 30-23, 30-22) win over UMBC on Friday night at UMBC RAC Arena.  Albany entered the match having swept its first five conference opponents in three sets before running into the Retrievers in the opening set tonight.  Despite the first set loss, the Great Danes followed the lead of Eileen Rodriguez, with 11 service aces, in the victory.  Emily Berman (Towson, Md./Towson) recorded 14 kills to lead UMBC with Julia Hood (Charlotte, N.C./West Charlotte), 11 kills, and Jessie Folk (S. Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North), 10 kills, also hitting double-digits.  Megan Gross (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) recorded her ninth double-double of the year with 41 assists and 14 digs. 

 

BINGHAMTON TOPS RETRIEVERS IN THREE SETS

The Retrievers lost to Binghamton in America East Volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at UMBC RAC Arena by a final score of 3-0 (30-26, 30-18, 30-26).  The Retrievers were led by 10 kills from Julia Hood (Charlotte, N.C./West Charlotte) and Emily Berman (Towson, Md./Towson).  The Retrievers looked strong early on in game one until momentum changed with the Retrievers leading 22-18.  Jen Smith took over serving for the Bearcats, rallying her team with eight-consecutive points to take a 26-22 lead.  The Bearcats went on to capture the first set 30-26 despite five kills in the opening set by Retriever middle hitter Jessie Folk (S. Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North).  Megan Gross (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) finished with 25 assists and nine digs and Julia Waclawiak (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Regan) recorded three service aces as she moved into seventh place all-time on the Retrievers career service aces chart.

GROSS RECORDES NINTH DOUBLE-DOUBLE OF THE YEAR                    

Megan Gross (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) recorded a double-double for the ninth time this year after handing out 44 assists and tallying 14 digs against Albany last Friday night.  Gross’ double-double marked the first match this season she has recorded a double-double without Retriever outside hitter Jocelyn Teoh (Puchong, Maylasia/Bukit Jalil Sports Academy) earning a double-double as well.

 GROSS MOVES WITHIN 200 OF 3,000 CAREER ASSISTS

Megan Gross (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) went over 2,800 career assists over the weekend is less than 200 from becoming the third Retriever ever to reach 3,000 career assists.  Gross handed out 66 helpers in two matches last week, averaging 9.43 assists per game.  The junior setter for her career has 2,810, 190 from reaching the 3,000 assists plateau.  Gross this season is averaging 9.96 assists per game with 827 total helpers.

TEOH ADDS TO CAREER KILLS MARK

Senior Jocelyn Teoh (Puchong, Maylaysia/Bujit Jalil Sports Academy), who became the sixth member of the UMBC Volleyball 1,000 Career Kills Club earlier this season, continued to add to her all-time fifth place mark with 13 kills in two matches last week.   Teoh, who started the season with 881 career kills, has scored 288 to date this season and holds a career kills mark of 1,169.  Dana Eberly ranks fourth with 1,311 career kills.

RETRIEVERS RANK SECOND AS A TEAM IN SERVICE ACES ON AMERICA EAST CONFERENCE CHARTS

The Retrievers as a squad rank second behind Albany in service aces per game with 2.11 and 175 on the season.  Four Retrievers rank in the top-10 on the America East Conference Individual chart with Emily Berman (Towson, Md./Towson) leading all-Retrievers at 0.51 per game.  Berman with 39 on the season ranks second to Eileen Rodrigues of Albany.  Jocelyn Teoh (Puchong, Maylasia/Bukit Jalil Sports Academy) ranks fifth with 0.43 per game, Julia Waclawiak (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Regan) and Christine Skala (Hinsdale, Ill/Hinsdale South) are tied for night at 0.35 per game.  

 

RETRIEVERS ON AMERICA EAST CONFERENCE CHARTS

Emily Berman (Towson, Md./Towson) and Jocelyn Teoh (Puchong, Maylasia/Bukit Jalil Sports Academy) rank fourth and seventh on the America East kills chart with Berman averaging 3.74 kills per game and Teoh with 3.472 kpg.  A number of other Retrievers are showing up in various categories as well with Megan Gross (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) ranking fourth in assists per game at 9.96, Christine Skala (Hinsdale, Ill/Hinsdale South) ranking eighth in digs per game at 3.35 and Teoh in 10th with 3.12 digs per game. 

 

FOLK TAKES OVER FIFTH ALL-TIME ON RETRIEVERS’ TOP-10 ASSISTED BLOCKS CAREER CHART

Sophomore Jessie Folk (S. Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) moved into fifth place after recording three assisted blocks last week.  Folk now has 131 career assisted blocks.  Junior Megan Gross (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) and senior Jocelyn Teoh (Punchong, Malaysia/Bukit Jalil Sports Academy) also rank on the Retrievers top-10 chart for career assisted blocks.  Gross has 117 career blocks and ranks ninth while Teoh leads all active players in career assisted blocks with 158 and is fourth all-time.

TEOH SEVEN BLOCKS FROM SIXTH ALL-TIME

Jocelyn Teoh (Punchong, Malaysia/Bukit Jalil Sports Academy) need seven total blocks to jump past three Retrievers and take sixth place all-time on the Retrievers career total blocks chart.  Teoh earlier this year became the fourth Retriever to achieve, 1,000 kills, 200 blocks and 100 service aces.  The others are Kelly O’Brien (2,161 kills, 251 blocks, 174 aces), Lisa Cline (1,869 kills, 208 blocks, 160 aces) and Rehena Rentuma (1,064 kills, 365 blocks, 189 aces).

WACLAWIAK CAPTURES SEVENTH PLACE ALL-TIME FOR CAREER SERVICE ACES

Senior Julia Waclawiak (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Regan) moved past Lisa Cline for seventh all-time on the Retrievers career Service Aces Chart.  Waclawiak this past weekend dropped four service aces against Albany and BInghamton.  The senior outside hitter last season recorded the Retrievers eighth best individual serving season with 65 aces, ranking 24th in the nation at 0.59 per game.  Waclawiak this season has 21 aces and needs six to move past Tracey Cullins for sixth all-time.

SKALA CLOSING IN ON 1,000 CAREER DIGS

Christine Skala (Hinsdale, Ill./Hindsdale South) is looking to become the seventh Retriever in program’s history to reach 1,000 career digs as she continued her climb last week and is within 100 of accomplishing the new mark.  Skala is averaging 3.35 digs per game, needs 89 to reach the 1,000 digs plateau.  A number of other Retrievers are in reach of joining UMBC’s top-10 digs chart with Jocelyn Teoh (Puchong, Malaysia/Bukit Jalil Sports Academy) leading all active Retrievers in the digs category.
