RETRIEVER VOLLEYBALL TAKES FIRST SET BUT FALLS IN MATCH TO ALBANY, 3-1

Baltimore, Md. – The UMBC Retrievers (11-12, 2-4 America East)  dealt Albany (18-5, 6-0 AE) their first set loss in conference play but dropped the final three sets as the Great Danes stayed perfected in league play with a 3-1 (29-31, 30-22, 30-23, 30-22) win over UMBC on Friday night at UMBC RAC Arena.  Albany entered the match having swept its first five conference opponents in three sets before running into the Retrievers in the opening set tonight.  Despite the first set loss, the Great Danes followed the lead of Eileen Rodriguez, with 11 service aces, in the victory.

 

Rodriguez, who in 2002 set an NCAA record for service aces in a season, took over serving in the fourth set with the Retrievers looking poised to force a game five as they held a 19-13 advantaged before the side out.  Rodriguez with the score 19-14, recorded seven service aces as the Great Danes scored 10-consecutive points with Rodriguez serving to take a 24-19 lead.  In the remaining points Ashley Hunter recorded three kills as the Great Danes took the fourth set 30-22.

 

The Retrievers for the match hit .126 compared to a .340 hitting percentage by Albany.  Shelby Goldman recorded 26 kills to lead the Great Danes with 58 assists going to Blair Buchanan.

 

Emily Berman (Towson, Md./Towson) recorded 14 kills to lead UMBC with Julia Hood (Charlotte, N.C./West Charlotte), 11 kills, and Jessie Folk (S. Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North), 10 kills, also hitting double-digits.  Megan Gross (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) recorded her ninth double-double of the year with 41 assists and 14 digs. 

 

The Retrievers return to the RAC on Saturday, Oct. 23 at 2:00 p.m. when they host Binghamton.
