Megan Gross moved into third on the Retrievers all-time assists chart last week.

Baltimore, Md.The UMBC Volleyball team continues to float around the .500 mark on the season, holding a 9-9 overall record and 0-1 in the America East conference after going 2-1 last week.  Among the news headlining the Retrievers is a look ahead at the Retrievers’ conference road games this week, a look back at last weeks three matches and Megan Gross crossing the 2,500 assists mark and moving into third place all-time on that UMBC career chart. 

 

LOOKING AHEAD

 

CONFERENCE PLAY IN FULL SWING

The Retrievers this week travel to the University of New Hampshire and the University of Maine on Friday, Oct. 8 and Saturday, Oct. 9, respectively for two America East Conference games.  UMBC, in their second season in the America East Conference, lost on both occasions to New Hampshire last year, falling the at New Hampshire by a 3-0 decision and losing at home in four sets.  Against Maine last season, the Retrievers faced the Black Bears on three occasions, going 2-1 against the conference foe.  The Retrievers met the Black Bears for the first time last season at the UCONN Autumn Classic with a five-set decision, winning the fifth and final set 15-13.  The Retrievers swept Maine in three on the road a month later before falling at home in three sets. 

 

VOLLEYBALL IN MIDST OF LONG ROAD SWING

The Retrievers Volleyball team is in the midst of an eight-game road stretch that has them playing away from the confines of RAC Arena from Sept. 24 to Oct. 22 when they return home to face Albany.  During the stretch the Retrievers will play their first five conference games on the road.  The Retrievers, who are currently 2-2 during the stretch, face New Hampshire and Maine this weekend.

RETRIEVERS CLOSE OUT NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULE WITH WINS OVER VCU AND MANHATTAN

The UMBC Volleyball combination of Jocelyn Teoh (Punchong, Maylasia/Bukit Jalil Sports Academy) and Megan Gross (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) led the Retrievers to two non-conference victories last week as the Retrievers defeated Virginia Commonwealth, 3-0 (30-31, 30-24, 30-23) and Manhattan, 3-0 (30-24, 30-22, 30-17).  Teoh and Gross each finished with double-doubles in both matches as Teoh recorded her 11th double-double of the season and Gross her sixth against Manhattan.  In five of the six games, the Retrievers held their opponent to under 25 points.  The Retrievers finish their non-conference schedule with a 9-8 record, 3-0 at home, 3-5 on the road and 3-3 at neutral sites. 

 

UMBC FALLS IN CONFERENCE OPENER TO STONY BROOK IN THREE SETS

The UMBC America East part of their schedule did not get off to the way the Retrievers had planned as Stony Brook handed the Retrievers their first league loss of the season in the conference opener.  The Seawolves downed UMBC 30-22, 30-22, 30-17 as the Retrievers were unable to produce a player out of single digits in kills.  Bright spots for the Retrievers were five assisted blocks by Jessie Folk (S. Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) and 10 digs by Christine Skala (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale South).

RETRIEVERS YET TO PLAY FIVE-SET MATCH THIS SEASON

The UMBC Volleyball team has yet to play a five-set match this season with the last five-set match coming Nov. 1 at home against Albany in 2003.  The Retrievers stretch of three or four-set matches is currently at 23 games, the longest in program history.  The Retrievers have never went a season in their D-I history (UMBC became Division-I in 1986) with out playing a five-set match and have at least three five-set matches in every season.  13 of UMBC’s 18 games this season have been three-set matches with the Retrievers 7-6 in three-set matches and 2-3 in four-set matches.

 

DYNAMIC DUO COMBINED FOR FOUR MORE DOUBLE-DOUBLES

Megan Gross (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) and Jocelyn Teoh (Puchong, Maylasia/Bukit Jalil Sports Academy)  each recorded two double-doubles  this past week as Gross has six on the season and Teoh has 11.  Gross this past week recorded double-doubles with 21 assists and 17 digs against VCU and 31 assists and 19 digs against Manhattan while Teoh recorded two double-doubles on the week with 12 kills and 14 digs against VCU and 14 kills and 11 digs against Manhattan.  In each of Gross’ six double-doubles, Teoh has also recorded a double-double as well.

 GROSS SURPASSES 2,500 ASSISTS, MOVES INTO THIRD ALL-TIME

Junior Megan Gross (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) continues to move up the Retrievers all-time career assists chart and became the fourth Retriever this past week to reach 2,500 career assists with her 21 helpers against VCU.  Against VCU Gross also moved into third place on the Retrievers’ all-time assists chart, passing Joy Figueredo who recorded 2,501 in her career.  This season Gross has handed out 583 assists (9.83 per game) including 73 in four matches last week.  Gross has 2,566 for her career and is 468 assists behind second place all-time.

TEOH ADDS TO CAREER KILLS MARK

Senior Jocelyn Teoh (Puchong, Maylaysia/Bujit Jalil Sports Academy), who became the sixth member of the UMBC Volleyball 1,000 Career Kills Club earlier this season, continued to add to her all-time fifth place mark with 33 kills in three matches last week.   Teoh, who started the season wit 881 career kills, has scored 222 to date this season and holds a career kills mark of 1,103.  Dana Eberly ranks fourth with 1,311 career kills.

RETRIEVERS ON AMERICA EAST CONFERENCE CHARTS

Jocelyn Teoh (Puchong, Maylasia/Bukit Jalil Sports Academy) and Emily Berman (Towson, Md./Towson) rank fifth and sixth, respectively, on the America East kills chart, Teoh averaging 3.76 kills per game and Berman averaging 3.75 per game.  Berman ranks second in service aces per game at 0.58 with 30 on the season while Teoh ranks fourth on the AE’s service aces per game chart with 0.49 per game and 29 aces on the year.   A number of other Retrievers are showing up in various categories as well with Megan Gross (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) ranking third in assists per game at 9.88, Christine Skala (Hinsdale, Ill/Hinsdale South) ranking ninth in digs per game at 3.44 and Jessie Folk (S. Elgin, Ill./St Charles North) ranking sixth in blocks per game at 0.86. 

 

THREE CURRENT RETRIEVERS HOLD SPOTS ON TOP-10 ASSISTED BLOCKS CAREER CHART

Junior Megan Gross (Montclair, Va./Forest Park), sophomore Jessie Folk (S. Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) and senior Jocelyn Teoh (Punchong, Malaysia/Bukit Jalil Sports Academy) all rank on the Retrievers top-10 chart for career assisted blocks.  Gross has 109 career blocks and ranks ninth behind Folk, who now has 121 career assisted blocks and is three behind seventh place Lisa Cline and Anna Gibbs.  Teoh leads all active players in career assisted blocks with 150 and is fourth all-time.

TEOH CLOSING IN ON 200 CAREER BLOCKS

Jocelyn Teoh (Punchong, Malaysia/Bukit Jalil Sports Academy) has 191 career total blocks after tallying four blocks last week, the fifth career top-10 chart Teoh is listed on.  Teoh moved into ninth all-time passing  Dawn Garnes and Pam Lottes (182 total blocks each) just over a week ago.  Teoh is closing in on 200 career blocks and needs just one service ace and nine blocks to become the third Retriever to achieve, 1,000 kills, 200 blocks and 100 service aces.  The others are Kelly O’Brien (2,161 kills, 251 blocks, 174 aces), Lisa Cline (1,869 kills, 208 blocks, 160 aces) and Rehena Rentuma (1,064 kills, 365 blocks, 189 aces).

WACLAWIAK SIX ACES BEHIND SEVENTH PLACE ALL-TIME

Senior Julia Waclawiak (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Regan) is six service aces behind Lisa Cline for seventh all-time on the Retrievers career Service Aces Chart.  Waclawiak last season recorded the Retrievers eighth best individual serving season with 65 aces, ranking 24th in the nation at 0.59 per game.  Waclawiak this season has 13 aces and currently ranks eighth all-time with 154 career service aces.

SKALA REACHES TOP-10 DIGS CAREER DIGS CHART, THREE OTHER RETRIEVERS IN REACH

Christine Skala (Hinsdale, Ill./Hindsdale South) became the latest current Retriever to join an all-time UMBC Volleyball career top-10 chart, moving into ninth place all-time with 836 career digs.  Skala tied for ninth all-time with her final dig against Stony Brook last Saturday and surpassed the mark with her first dig against Manhattan last Sunday.  A number of Retrievers are in reach of joining UMBC’s top-10 digs chart with Julia Waclawiak (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Reagan) leading all active Retrievers in the digs category.
