VOLLEYBALL NEWS AND NOTES

9/27/2004

Julia Waclawiak needs seven aces to tie Lisa Cline for seventh all-time on the Retrievers career service aces chart.

Headlining the Retrievers this week is a look at the opening of conference play with a road match against Stony Brook, Jocelyn Teoh and Megan Gross moving up in two different career categories with Teoh taking over fifth on the all-time kills chart and Gross claiming fourth on the all-time assists chart and a recap of the Retrievers 2-1 record last week.  The UMBC Women’s Volleyball Media Guide is also now available online in the information center bar on the Retriever Volleyball home page.

LOOKING AHEAD

CONFERENCE PLAY TO START THIS WEEK

The Retrievers will embark on their second year in the America East Conference when they travel to Stony Brook to open the league part of their schedule on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.  UMBC finished last year seventh in the conference with a 3-11 record against league foes.  The Retrievers were picked to finish in a tie for sixth place in the preseason coaches’ poll.  The first five conference games for UMBC will take place on the road as per conference regulations the Retrievers will play each team twice, once at home and once on the road.  The Retrievers lost both matches to Stony Brook last year, falling in three sets on the road and in four at home.

NON-CONFERENCE PLAY CONCLUDES THIS WEEK WITH VCU AND MANHATTAN

The Retrievers non-conference slate will conclude this week when UMBC visits Virginia Commonwealth and Manhattan.  The Retrievers to date are 7-8 in non-conference play with a 3-0 record at home.  The Retrievers last met VCU in a late non-conference match on Nov. 19, 2002 with a home win over the Rams at RAC Arena.  The Retrievers won the match in three sets.  UMBC faced Manhattan last season at the Villanova Invitational, winning in four sets on the neutral court.

VOLLEYBALL IN MIDST OF LONG ROAD SWING

The Retrievers Volleyball team last week began what could be a crucial part of their season as they started an eight match road stretch.  The Retrievers are going to have to learn to become Road Warriors and win away from the confines of RAC Arena as their schedule will have them playing on the road for nearly a month before returning home.  The Retrievers eight-match road stretch began with James Madison last Friday night with a 3-0 loss.  The Retrievers will play other non-conference opponents Virginia Commonwealth and Manhattan during the stretch and start the America East part of their schedule with five road league games, not returning home to play until Oct. 22 against Albany.
