JAMES MADISON DOWNS RETRIEVER VOLLEYBALL IN THREE SETS

HARRISONBURG, Va. (9/24/04) – James Madison volleyball defeated UMBC on Friday night at Godwin Hall as the Dukes swept the Retrievers 30-16, 30-25, 30-20 in the non-conference match.

 

JMU improved to 10-2 overall and continued its best start of the season in six years.  UMBC slipped to 7-8 after having won its previous two matches.

 

Sophomore Ashley Copenhaver paced JMU’s attack with 10 kills on 19 swings and four errors for .316 accuracy.  Sophomore Bayli Stillwell came away with nine kills, and senior Kate Fuchs nailed eight and had a match-high five block assists.

 

UMBC Senior outside hitter Jocelyn Teoh (Puchong, Malaysia) led all players with 13 kills.  Teoh with the 13 kills moves into fifth place on the Retrievers career all-time kills chart.  Also moving up on a career chart was Megan Gross (Montclair, Va./Forest Park), who finished the game with 28 assists and moved into fourth place all-time on the Retrievers’ assists chart. 

 

The Retrievers return to action with a road non-conference match at Virginia Commonwealth on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
