RETRIEVER VOLLEYBALL MOVES BACK TO .500 WITH 3-1 WIN OVER LOYOLA

Megan Gross was close to a triple-double with eight kills, 38 assists and 19 digs against Loyola on Thursday.

Baltimore, Md. -  The UMBC Women’s Volleyball team (7-7) defeated their second cross-town rival in the past three days as they move back to the .500 mark with a 3-1 (30-17, 30-16, 23-30, 30-22) win over Loyola (Md.) (3-10) on Thursday night at UMBC RAC Arena  Jocelyn Teoh (Puchong, Malaysia/Bukit Jalil Sports Academy) and Megan Gross (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) each finished with double-doubles in the match, Teoh’s ninth double-double of the season and Gross’ third.

The Retrievers controlled play through the first two sets as UMBC recorded 14 kills and a .278 hitting percentage in game one and 18 kills and a .395 hitting percentage in game two.  Gross led the attack as she was well on her way to a double-double with 12 assists and seven digs after the first game. 

The Greyhounds fought back strong in the third set of the night as Becky Corb, who finished with a team-high 15 kills for Loyola, recorded seven kills and .500 hitting percentage to pace the third-game win.  After UMBC battled back from a 9-4 deficit, the Greyhounds broke a 21-21 tie and scored nine of the final 11 points in the set.

The Retrievers, however, held the Greyhounds from forcing a fifth set as a balanced attack that included four kills by Gross, five by Emily Berman (Towson, Md./Towson), four by Teoh and four by Jessie Folk (S. Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) led UMBC to 20 kills and a .341 hitting percentage in the final set. 

The Retrievers recorded 13 service aces in the match and 10 total blocks.  Gross came close to her first ever triple-double with eight kills, 38 assists and 19 digs.  Teoh finished with 13 kills and 11 digs while Berman recorded a match-high 17 k ills and Folk finished with 11.  Freshman Katrina Carrick (San Diego, Calif./Morse) registered the top hitting percentage in the match with nine kills, one error on 12 attacks for a .667 hitting percentage.  She also added one solo and three assisted blocks. 

Corb finished with 15 kills and Krystal Biegaj recorded 32 assists for Loyola.

The Retrievers travel to James Madison for their third game in the past four days on Friday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m.  In that match Teoh has a chance to move into fifth on the Retrievers all-time kills chart as she currently need seven to tie Rehena Rentuma at 1,064 career kills and Gross needs just 12 assists to tie Judy Jackson for fourth on the Retrievers career assists chart at 2,481. 

The game marked the second time the Retrievers and Greyhounds met this year as UMBC defeated Loyola in three sets at the William & Mary Invitational just under two weeks ago.
