VOLLEYBALL NEWS AND NOTES

Jessie Folk recorded her first career double-double last week with 11 kills and 12 digs against Yale.

, Md.  The Retrievers return home this week to host Coppin State on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. and Loyola (Md.) on Thursday night at 7 p.m., before heading to James Madison on Friday night at 7 p.m.  Other headlines include Jocleyn Teoh joining the 1,000 kill club, Jessie Folk’s first career double-double and a look at the Retrievers long road stretch ahead.

RETRIEVERS TO PLAY THREE MATCHES IN FOUR DAYS THIS WEEK

The Retrievers have a tough stretch this week that will have UMBC playing three matches in a span of four days.  The Retrievers will host Coppin State on Tuesday at 7 p.m., host Loyola (Md.) at 7 p.m. on Thursday and travel to James Madison on Friday at 7 p.m.  UMBC has defeated Coppin State the last two seasons including 3-0 win last year.  The Retrievers and Loyola (Md.) met once this season as the Retrievers were able to sweep the Greyhounds in three games at the William & Mary Invitational just over a week ago.  The Retrievers last meeting against James Madison came on Nov. 13, 2002 at James Madison as the Dukes beat UMBC, 3-1. 

 

VOLLEYBALL TO TAKE LONG ROAD SWING STARTING FRIDAY

The Retrievers Volleyball team is going to have to learn to become Road Warriors and win away from the confines of RAC Arena as their schedule will have them playing on the road for nearly a month before returning home.  The Retrievers eight-match road stretch begins with James Madison on Friday night at 7 p.m.  The Retrievers will play other non-conference opponents Virginia Commonwealth and Manhattan during the stretch. The Retrievers start the America East part of their schedule with five road league games, not returning home to play until Oct. 22 against Albany.

VOLLEYBALL WINS FIFTH MATCH IN PREVIOUS SIX WITH 3-0 SWEEP OF MORGAN STATE

The Retrievers swept cross-town foe Morgan State in three games (30-24, 30-20, 30-16) last Wednesday Night at to win their fifth match in the previous six.  UMBC received big performances from freshman Emily Berman (Towson, Md./Towson) with 15 kills, Jocelyn Teoh (Puchong, Maylasia/Bukit Jalil Sports Academy) with 12 kills and Megan Gross (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) with 32 assists. The Retrievers held Morgan State to single digit kills as a team in all three games as the Retrievers racked up 47 digs, 10 by Teoh as she recorded her sixth double-double of the year (12 kills, 10 digs) and her third straight. 

 

UMBC COMES UP EMPTY AT PENN STATE NITTANY LION INVITATIONAL

After falling in their opening match of the Nittany Lion Invitational to No. 5 Penn State, 3-0 (30-14, 30-12, 30-12) on Friday, the Retrievers dropped two more matches on Saturday, losing to their second Big EAST foe in as many days with a 3-0 (21-30, 15-30, 22-30) loss to West Virginia and dropping their final match of the tournament to Yale, 3-1 (22-30, 25-30, 30-23, 21-30).  The three losses pushed the Retrievers two games back under .500 at 5-7 on the year heading into the fourth week of the season.

 

TEOH AND FOLK EARN PLACES ON PENN STATE NITTANY LION INVITATIONAL ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM

Senior Jocelyn Teoh (Puchong, Maylasia/Bukit Jalil Sports Academy) and Jessie Folk (S. Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) earned spots on the Penn State Nittany Lion Invitational All-Tournament Team.  Teoh finished the weekend with 3.60 kills per game, racking up 36 total kills.  Teoh added 14 assists in 10 games played, 29 digs, and six total blocks (three solo, three assisted).  Folk recorded her first career double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs against Yale.  The middle blocker recorded 11 assisted blocks and against West Virginia tallied seven kills with no errors on 15 attacks for a .467 hitting percentage.

TEOH JOINS 1,000 KILLS CLUB, EYES TOP-5 CAREER RANKING

Senior Jocelyn Teoh (Puchong, Maylaysia/Bujit Jalil Sports Academy) became the sixth member of the UMBC Volleyball 1,000 Career Kills Club with her third kill against Penn State.  Teoh entered the week needing 15 kills and finally reached the plateau after scoring 12 kills against Morgan State and six against Penn State.  Teoh after the week has 1,033 career kills, 31 behind fifth place on the Retrievers all-time chart (Rehena Rentuma with 1,064).  Teoh in four matches last week recorded 48 kills and has a good chance of catching Rentuma with three matches scheduled in the upcoming week.  Teoh started her senior campaign with 882 kills and has 152 this season already, averaging 3.80 per game.

GROSS CLOSING IN ON FOURTH PLACE ON ALL-TIME ASSISTS CHART

Junior Megan Gross (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) became the fifth Retriever setter to reach the 2,000 assists mark earlier this year after coming into the season with 1,983 career assists.  Gross handed out 124 assists (9.54 per game) in four matches last week and has recorded 420 assists through 12 matches this season.  She ranks fifth on the Retrievers all-time career assists chart and is closing on Judy Jackson (1993-94) for fourth place.  Gross is 78 assists back of Jackson who has 2,481 career assists.

FOLK RECORDS FIRST CAREER DOUBLE-DOUBLE

Sophomore Jessie Folk (S. Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) recorded her first career double-double against Yale last weekend as Folk recorded 11 kills and 12 digs in the four-game match.  Folk also had four assisted blocks in the match as she earned all-tournament honors.  The Retrievers recorded three double-double performances against Yale as Megan Gross (Montclair, Va./Forest Park)finished with 49 assists and a career-high 22 digs while Jocelyn Jocelyn Teoh (Puchong, Maylasia/Bukit Jalil Sports Academy)  had 20 kills and 11 digs in the match.

BERMAN AND TEOH HOLD TWO OF TOP-5 SPOTS ON AMERICA EAST CONFERENCE KILLS CHART

Freshman Emily Berman (Towson, Md./Towson) and senior Jocelyn Teoh (Puchong, Maylasia/Bukit Jalil Sports Academy) both rank in the top-5 on the America East kills per game chart after the third week of competition.  Berman ranks third with a 4.00 kills per game average in 37 games played.  Berman has 148 total kills on the year.  Teoh ranks fifth at 3.80 kills per game.  Last year Teoh finished the season leading the AE in kills per game. 

 

RETRIEVERS ON AMERICA EAST CONFERENCE CHARTS

In addition to Emily Berman (Towson, Md./Towson) and Jocelyn Teoh (Puchong, Maylasia/Bukit Jalil Sports Academy) in the America East kills chart, a number of other Retrievers are showing up in various categories.  Megan Gross (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) ranks third in assists per game at 10.50, Christine Skala (Hinsdale, Ill/Hinsdale South) ranks seventh in digs per game at 3.70 while Jessie Folk (S. Elgin, Ill./St Charles North) ranks ninth in blocks per game at 0.88.  Berman ranks fourth in service aces at 0.54 and Teoh eighth at 0.43 per game.  Freshman Britney Hodson (South Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) is fourth in hitting percentage at .306 with 26 kills on 62 total attacks.  

 

FOLK JOINS TOP-10 ASSISTED BLOCKS CAREER CHART

Sophomore Jessie Folk (S. Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) joined her first Retrievers’ top-10 chart after posting 13 assisted blocks last week, going over the 100 assisted block mark and jumping into eighth all-time.  Folk now has 106 career assisted blocks and is 18 behind seventh place Lisa Cline and Anna Gibbs.

Jocelyn Teoh (Punchong, Malaysia/Bukit Jalil Sports Academy) has 182 career total blocks after tallying seven blocks last week, joining her fifth career top-10 chart.  Teoh is tied with Dawn Garnes and Pam Lottes (182 total blocks each) for ninth all-time.
