UMBC VOLLEYBALL COMES UP EMPTY AT NITTANY LION INVITATIONAL, FALLS TO WEST VIRGINIA, 3-0, AND YALE, 3-1, ON SATURDAY.

State College, Pa. – After falling in their opening match of the Nittany Lion Invitational to No. 5 Penn State on Friday, the Retrievers dropped two more matches on Saturday, losing to their second Big EAST foe in as many days with a 3-0 (21-30, 15-30, 22-30) loss to West Virginia and dropping their final match of the tournament to Yale, 3-1 (22-30, 25-30, 30-23, 21-30). 

 

Megan Gross had a big game against Yale with 49 assists and 22 digs while teammate Jocleyn Teoh finished the tournament strong, with 20 kills and 11 digs for second double-double of the tournament.  Emily Berman recorded 15 kills, Jessie Folk 11 and Britney Hodson, who led all Retrievers with a .467 hitting percentage, had nine kills. 

 

Yale place four players in double-digit kills as Renee Lopes led the Bulldogs with 17 kills while Jacqueline Becker handed out 55 assists.

 

Against West Virginia, the Retrievers were led by a double-double by Teoh (10 kills and 11 digs) and 11 kills by Berman.  Megan Gross finished with 30 assists on the day while Folk had a solid match for UMBC, recording seven kills with no errors and a .467 hitting percentage.

 

The Mountaineers proved to be to strong for Retrievers as Stephanie Zolna and Abby Tevis each had 13 kills.  Tevis did not record an error in the three matches for a .565 hitting percentage as the Mountaineers hit .352 as a team. 

 

The Retrievers return home this week with Coppin State on Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. in RAC Arena.
