No. 5 PENN STATE DOWNS RETRIEVER VOLLEYBALL, 3-0

Jocelyn Teoh crossed the 1,000 kill mark on Friday night with six kills against Penn State.

No. 5 Penn State Def. UMBC, 3-0 (30-14, 30-12, 30-12)

 

State College, Pa. -  The No. 5 ranked Penn State Nittany Lions (7-0) defeated UMBC (5-5) on Friday night in both team’s opening match at the Nittany Lion Invitational.  Penn State captured the match in three games, beating UMBC 30-14, 30-12 and 30-12.  UMBC’s Jocelyn Teoh (Punchong, Maylasia/Bukit Jalil Sports Academy) finished the match with 6 kills, becoming the sixth Retriever to reach the 1,000 kill plateau.  Teoh, who entered the match with 997 career kills before surpassing the mark, now has 1,003 kills in her career.

 

A bright spot for the Retrievers was freshman Marisa Gross (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) as the rookie outside hitter recorded eight kills, a career-high for her in a three-game match.   Gross finished with a team-high hitting percentage of .263 (8 kills, 3 errors and 18 total attacks).

 

Penn State tallied 18 kills in game one, 16 in game two and 18 in game three, hitting over .400 in each of the three games.  Three Nittany Lions finished in double-digit kills including Ashley Pederson and Kate Price with 11 kills each. 

 

The Retrievers return to action with West Virginia at 1 p.m. and Yale at 4 p.m. in Saturday action of the Nittany Lion Invitational.
