Senior Jocelyn Teoh is 15 kills from becoming the Retrievers' sixth player to join the 1,000-kill club.

Baltimore, Md. –  Among the many Retriever headlines this week is a date with No. 5 ranked Penn State, senior Jocelyn Teoh a mere 15 kills away from becoming the sixth member of the Retrievers’ 1,000-kill club and a review of last week that includes UMBC taking two out of three America East weekly honors.   

 

RETRIEVERS TRAVELTO MORGAN STATE, NO. 5 PENN STATE FOR NITTANY LION INVITATIONAL

The Retrievers are on the road this week heading to cross-town foe Morgan State University on Wednesday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. and head to No. 7 Penn State for the Nittany Lion Invitational where they will also face West Virginia and Yale on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 17-18.  The Retrievers will take on No. 7 Penn State at 7:30 on Friday, Sept. 17.  UMBC will follow up with West Virginia at 1 p.m. and Yale at 4 p.m. on Saturday.  The Retrievers last met Morgan State on Sept. 30 of last year as UMBC pulled out a 3-2 win over the Bears last year with a 15-13 game five win. 

 

VOLLEYBALL GOES 3-1 ON THE WEEK, SEES WIN STREAK END AT FOUR

The Retrievers went 3-1 last week and extended their win streak to four-consecutive matches before falling to The College of William & Mary, 3-1 (30-23, 20-30, 32-30, 30-23) in the finale of the William & Mary Invitational.  UMBC placed second at the tournament after wins against Hampton, 3-0 (30-25, 30-19, 30-15) and Loyola (Md.), 3-0 (30-16, 30-28, 30-20).  The Retrievers opened the week with a four-game win over St. Francis (Pa.) (30-21, 30-20, 29-31, 30-22). 

 

RETRIEVERS TAKE TWO OF THREE WEEKLY CONFERENCE AWARDS

Emily Berman (Towson, Md./Towson) and Megan Gross (Montclair, Va./Montclair) took two of three all-conference awards as Berman was tabbed America East Player of the Week and Gross was named America East Setter of the Week for the week ending September 12.  Hartford’s Jennifer Monroy was named Rookie of the Week in the third conference weekly honor.  The awards are the first for UMBC Volleyball this season and Berman’s first ever conference accolade.  It is Gross’ third time she has been named setter of the week by the conference, earning the honors twice last year.

 

Berman, a freshman from nearby Towson, Md., had a stellar week for the Retrievers, averaging 5.43 kills per game and a hitting percentage of .400 as UMBC extended a season-long win streak to four straight and placed second at the William & Mary Invitational over the weekend.  Berman in four matches recorded 76 kills, 10 service aces, 10 digs and four total blocks (1 solo, 3 assisted).  Berman, who last season injured her shoulder just six matches into the year and sat out the rest of the season, was named to the All-Tournament team at the William & Mary Invitational averaging 5.50 kills per game and a .375 hitting percentage at the two-day, three match event.  She recorded a career-high 22 kills against host school and tournament champion William & Mary trumping her 21-kill performance earlier in the week against St. Francis (Pa.).  For the season she is averaging 4.42 kills per game and a .307 hitting percentage. 

 

Gross directed the Retriever offense to three wins on the as the junior setter recorded 172 assists (12.29 per game) last week in four matches played.  Gross went over the 40-assists mark in three of the team’s four matches and recorded 12.80 assists per game (128 total assists) at the William & Mary Invitational en route to earning All-Tournament accolades.  Against St. Francis (Pa.) to open the week Gross handed out 44 helpers in the four-game match.  She went on to recorded 37 assists against Hampton in the tournament opener, 44 in the three-game match against Loyola (Md.) and a season-high 47 assists in the four-game match against William & Mary.  Gross finished the week with 36 digs, including 12 against Loyola (Md.), eight service aces, and five total blocks (1 solo, 4 assisted).  For the season she has 296 assists, a 10.96 per game average.


 BERMAN AND GROSS NAMED TO WILLIAM & MARY INVITATIONAL ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM

Freshman Emily Berman and junior Megan Gross were named to the William & Mary Invitational all-tournament team in addition to earning weekly conference accolades.  Berman averaged 5.50 kills per game and Gross recorded 12.80 assists per game at the two-day, three match invitational.

TEOH 15 KILLS FROM 1,000 KILLS CLUB

Senior Jocelyn Teoh (Puchong, Maylaysia/Bujit Jalil Sports Academy) is closing in 1,000 career kills after starting the season with 881.  After averaging 4.00 kills per game in four matches last week Teoh has accumulated 104 kills in eight matches this season and is 15 kills away from becoming the sixth Retriever in UMBC Volleyball history to join the 1,000 kill club.  Teoh will be after that mark on Wednesday, Sept. 15 at Morgan State.

 GROSS CLOSING IN ON FOURTH PLACE ON ALL-TIME ASSISTS CHART

Junior Megan Gross (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) became the fifth Retriever setter to reach the 2,000 assists mark earlier this year after coming into the season with 1,983 career assists.  Gross handed out 172 assists (12.29 per game) in four matches last week and has recorded 296 assists through eight matches this season.  She ranks fifth on the Retrievers all-time career assists chart and is closing on Judy Jackson (1993-94) for fourth place.  Gross is 202 assists back of Jackson who has 2,481 career assists.

BERMAN LEADS AMERICA EAST CONFERENCE IN KILLS AFTER WEEK TWO

Freshman Emily Berman (Towson, Md./Towson) leads the America East in kills per game after the second week of competition as she holds a 4.42 kills per game average in 24 games played.  Berman has 106 total kills on the year.  Teammate Jocelyn Teoh (Puchong, Maylasia/Bukit Jalil Sports Academy) ranks fourth at 3.85 kills per game.  Last year Teoh finished the season leading the AE in kills per game. 

 

RETRIEVERS ON AMERICA EAST CONFERENCE CHARTS

In addition to Emily Berman (Towson, Md./Towson) and Jocelyn Teoh (Puchong, Maylasia/Bukit Jalil Sports Academy) in the America East kills chart, a number of other Retrievers are showing up in various categories.  Megan Gross (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) ranks third in assists per game at 10.96, Christine Skala (Hinsdale, Ill/Hinsdale South) ranks sixth in digs per game at 4.00 and sixth in service aces per game at 0.44.  Berman ranks four in service aces at 0.54 and Teoh fifth at 0.52 per game.  Berman also ranks fifth in hitting percentage at .307.  

 

IN REACH OF TOP-10 STATUS

A number of Retrievers are in reach of joining UMBC’s top-10 in a various career charts.  UMBC sophomore Jessie Folk (S. Elgin, Ill./St Charles North) is the closest Retriever to top-10 status needing three assisted blocks to join UMBC’s all-time assisted blocks chart.  Folk has 93 career assisted blocks while teammate Megan Gross (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) is closely behind with 89 career assisted blocks.

Julia Waclawiak (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Reagan) and Christine Skala (Hinsdale, Ill./Hindsdale South) lead all active Retrievers in the digs category as Waclawiak has 746 career digs and Skala has recorded 741 career digs.  Skala, the Retrievers starting libero through the first eight matches, looks most poised to catch Judy Jackson and Joy Figueredo, who each have 826 career digs, as Skala is averaging 4.00 digs per game and has amassed 108 digs to date this season.

Jocelyn Teoh (Punchong, Malaysia/Bukit Jalil Sports Academy) has 175 career total blocks and is seven away from joining her fifth career top-10 chart.  Teoh trails Dawn Garnes and Pam Lottes (182 total blocks each) for ninth all-time.
